Penelope gave Barcus a smile, and then went to sit beside Vol, sharing quiet discussion as to what the next day, and the days after that, might bring them. Vol had few words for her, but he did listen. Penelope had learned to tell the difference by now, and she was content to take control of the conversation herself.

The noise of the army preparing itself outside seemed almost ambient, like the comforting patter of stormy rain outside. It had nothing to do with them. They were sheltered from it. They could relax knowing that whatever might come to pass, they would have the strength to deal with it.

Within the hour, the majority of the veterans had found a quiet place to curl themselves up and go to sleep.
