My eyes widened as I looked over my shoulder. I focused the mana cloaking my body on my back, forming a tight ice shield behind me.

I didn't wait to see if it would hold, flying toward the water. An explosion created a sonic boom over the lake, sending me plummeting into its now icy waters.

As I plunged into the icy depths, the water around me crystallized into a dome of ice, shielding me from the shockwaves of the explosion above. The resulting waves shook me around, forcing me into my knees. It was a desperate move, but it bought me a few precious seconds to gather my thoughts and come up with a plan.

I channeled my mana, feeling the familiar thrum of energy coursing through my veins. Ice formed around my fists, sharp and deadly. I propelled myself upwards, bursting through the frozen surface of the lake and soaring back towards the battlefield.
