Chapter 48 : Clandestine Meetings

Mia’s recovery process isn’t easy. Her coma, while still within the limits of the expected time frame, leaves her with slight brain damage and some muscle atrophy. She hasn’t spoken since waking up, but the doctors believe it’s more psychological than anything. Something is different in her—a solemn sadness that she seems to sink into more with every day.

Elon is with her every step of the way, but there’s so little he can do that seems to make any difference. They send Mia home after another week in the hospital, under strict orders to stay home at least until she’s gotten a little stronger.

Elon hasn’t left her side in weeks, but now that Mia’s home, he has business to take care of. While she’s eating lunch with her grandparents, Elon sneaks back to their room to take a call. He listens to the phone ring for what feels like hours until eventually, the person on the other line picks up.
