Chapter 30 : Mila's Choice

The sky turned light gray, belying the late hour. A light flurry scattered tiny flakes of white through the air as we climbed into Lucas’ extended cab dually. The engine warmed up, dust coating the truck’s black paint job.

The feathery flakes blew away from the truck as soon as Lucas pulled onto the main road.

I wish I could leave my anxiety behind with the wind.

I couldn’t get over Sophie’s promise of revenge. She believed I’d wronged her and now I’d corrupted her poor innocent Oliver.

Turns out, Oliver isn’t so innocent as he seemed, though he is as sweet.

The incredible night in front of the fireplace with both Lucas and Oliver kept me from pitching into a pit of despair. Oliver and Lucas sensed my mood. Lucas turned his eyes away from the road as white flakes melted instantly on the windshield.

“Are you all right, Mila?”

“I wish you’d stop asking me that, Lucas. Of course I’m not alright. How could I be all right with what just happened?”
