Chapter 36 : Behind the Mask

Erik’s POV

The assassin flew off me, an arrow sticking out of their chest. Shock welled inside of me, looking behind me to see Poppy, a look of utter rage coloring her face. Blood bubbled up out of the assassin’s mask, staining their all-black attire.

Poppy rose to her feet, blood on her hands and her knees. Part of me wanted to praise her for being such a good shot, but I couldn’t do that to her. It wasn’t the time to make light. It was her first kill.

I remembered mine.

I was in my bed, and someone tried to kill me, the firstborn son, in my parents’ longhouse. I just stabbed them before they could stab me. And just like that…my childhood was over. Poppy was lucky to be shielded from death for so long that I felt guilty taking that away from her.

The brightness in her dulled. I saw it. And it made my stomach sink.

I approached the dead assassin and pulled off their gloves, looking for the six fingers of the Knoll Elves. But there were only five.
