Chapter 30: How to Repay

Coulson and Melinda looked at Oaks with horror in their eyes.

Didn't he say before that his "ability" was to communicate with animals through telepathy?!

What's with this plant control?!

These are two completely different levels of abilities!

"Mr. Oaks, how many 'abilities' do you actually have? Is this also your experimental achievement?" Coulson forced a smile as he holstered his gun. He saw the man from the data appearing among the crowd in the distance.

"I thought we had already talked about this before."

"Accidental, it was an experimental accident. It's an irreproducible scientific miracle—my research field is biology, not animal studies."

Oaks had an expression of nonchalance on his face.

"I only said one thing, and you're all so cautious. If I say it too many times, are you going to capture me and dissect me?"

"No, no, no... Why would we?"

Coulson quickly denied it.

"We have also encountered many extraordinary individuals with unusual abilities, but unless they have abilities that cannot be controlled and pose significant harm to society, we handle them according to the evaluation results—monitoring being the most severe measure."

"It's not like monitoring in the underwater super-prison, is it?"

Oaks quipped, referring not to the one in the cartoon but the one where several members of Captain America's camp were held after the Civil War.

"You have an active mind."

Melinda tilted her head and looked at Oaks with a mysterious gaze.

"Indeed, such places exist, but not every level of criminal is eligible for confinement there."

Meaning, only major criminals can get in.

"But I suggest we don't discuss this topic for now. Look, that guy is on the verge of tears."

Melinda pursed her lips, signaling Oaks to handle it himself, and took a step back, watching the scene with Coulson.

"It seems like this mission is becoming more and more interesting."

Melinda whispered to Coulson:

"I dare say that Oaks has other abilities."

"Why are you so sure?"

Coulson also spoke softly:

"These two abilities are already strong enough. If we say that telepathic communication with animals is within the realm of understanding, then what about plant control? What's that all about?"

He pursed his lips and couldn't help but quip:

"He says it's an experimental accident. Can you believe that?"

"Why not? Wasn't the Hulk also a scientific accident?"

Melinda didn't want to dwell on this matter:

"At least he voluntarily demonstrated his abilities, which means he is friendly to us, and he exercises great restraint.

As for why I'm certain he has other abilities..."

Melinda narrowed her eyes and when Coulson looked serious, ready to hear her analysis, she uttered a single word:

"Intuition."

"..."

But Coulson didn't have time to complain about Melinda's poor joke because Blaze had already confirmed Oaks's identity.

"I am Blaze Clark, sir, and I am immensely grateful to you for saving my life.

You are the messenger of God, the great benefactor of over three hundred impoverished people here!

Because of your benevolence, over a hundred people have been saved from death in the past two winters."

Blaze remained calm as the crowd exclaimed in astonishment. He dropped his crutch, supported himself with his hands, and knelt down on one knee.

"Sir, if my establishment of the Benevolence Society has offended you, please punish me alone... At the very least, please let them survive this winter!"

"Mr. Blaze!"

"Sir! Please don't punish Mr. Blaze!"

"Sir! We are willing to share the punishment with Clark. Please do not vent your anger on these poor people!"

...

It was at this moment that the people noticed that the owner of this forest had a cold expression—being able to manipulate the "living vines" of the Little Rainforest was undoubtedly the most direct evidence of Oaks's identity.

Oaks had never appeared before, but they knew somewhat about Blaze's situation—he and the members of Benevolence Society were thrown into that forest in the first place because of their crimes.

Being able to enter the forest again was because Blaze was on the verge of death back then—this was an act of kindness directed at him alone.

However, Blaze used this kindness to help unrelated people like them, which undoubtedly went against the intentions of this person.

"You know, Clark."

Oaks's deep voice rang out, and the entire venue fell silent.

"Seven years ago, when I was under fifteen, shortly after losing my parents, I, who was still a bit lost, came here by chance."

Blaze's kneeling figure trembled slightly. He knew very well what kind of chaotic scene it was here seven years ago.

And what would happen to a teenager, with a mixed Celtic heritage, coming here alone.

"It seems you've figured it out. Yes, I was kidnapped at that time... The bastards who kidnapped me wanted to sell me."

Oaks's expression grew even colder, and it felt like the surrounding temperature dropped a few degrees for the people.

"But I was lucky enough to escape."

Naturally, he wouldn't mention how he escaped; Coulson and Melinda were still watching.

"Later, when I became successful in my studies and needed human experiments, I immediately thought of this place."

Blaze's back broke out in a sweat. Indeed, his intuition back then was correct.

It was indeed a human experiment.

"You figured it out, right? But those bastards from back then are no longer around. I didn't think about revenge against all of them. I only caught criminals like you, who had records under your belt. But I didn't expect that you would achieve such a great undertaking."

Blaze lowered his head deeply.

What could he say?

For a person with extreme views, having these extraordinary means would have been enough to wipe out half the block.

"You also know that the winter when you came here on the verge of freezing to death, I was watching you from the shadows."

Oaks slowly squatted down, lifting Blaze's head and staring at him:

"From that winter onwards, I saw you every day, and you... never disappointed me."

Blaze widened his eyes in astonishment.

"Now, I ask you, after that time, have you committed any crimes again?"

"No! Sir, I swear on my soul!"

"Have you used Benevolence Society for illegal activities?"

"No! Sir, I swear on my soul!"

"Have you used Benevolence Society for personal gain?"

"No! Sir, I swear on my soul!"

"Very well..."

Finally, a gentle smile appeared on Oaks's face, like a spring breeze. A vine emerged from beside him, coiled around Blaze's crutch, and brought it to his side.

"In that case, are you willing to help me eliminate hunger and improve the living environment for humanity?"

"Sir, it would be my honor!"

Supporting himself with tears streaming down his face, Blaze stood up. Oaks announced loudly to the cheering people:

"I, Oaks Woods, the owner of this forest, Little Rainforest, from today onward, acknowledge the existence of the Benevolence Society and assume the position of chairman!"

"And Mr. Blaze Clark will be the vice chairman of the Benevolence Society, and the Little Rainforest will continue to exist!"

"Oaks! Oaks! Oaks!"

"Blaze! Blaze! Blaze!"

"Benevolence Society! Benevolence Society! Benevolence Society!"

Cheers resounded throughout the entire block.
