City Protection battle (Part 2)

After the artificial forest came the bombardment from all forms of ranged projectiles.

The flying monsters that managed to avoid having their wings burned off and were instead shot down by this veritable wall of projectiles and bombs.

This didn't only include arrows ,boulders and other forms of things thrown by the soldiers, but also one of the things that was the result of the application of the runic techniques.

Turrets, ballistae's and plasma and laser weapons also made their way onto the scene of the battle and started blasting off different types of energy beams.

Pilots of different types of aircrafts also arrived to blast to smitherines all those that were missed by those on the floor while also were dropping bombs on the marching wave.

The world bofore the apocalypse was one where the applications of science were as vast and useful as the harm it caused.

It isn't really surprising that they managed to use the neo-energy and runic techniques to replicate and make better what they had before even though all forms of former technology were destroyed or lost permanently.

Explosions of different kinds took place as different people used their different abilities in tandem as the monsters were torn apart by the systematic blasts of the ranged warriors launching their ranged attacks and the blasts of different types of bombs being thrown and beams fired.

Pieces of monsters were thrown in all directions along with pieces of earth, some even acting as shrapnel and hitting and injuring other ones near them.

The barrage did a number on them as the ones that made it out of that bombardment field were littered with wounds that either took of a limb or at least exposed bones.

The ground troops of the army were the next to engage in this earth shaking battle as the monsters made it out of the two kilometer long strike zone.

Because of the lower numbers of people with defense focused and healing abilities, only 30 percent of the fire teams on the ground had them and they were all spaced out to help anywhere on the battlfield that they were needed.

The rest were at the back lines assisting those brought back to be healed or protecting the backlines from those monsters that could fly and tried to fly over the soldiers if they by some miracle escaped the bombardment and actually got to the backlines.

All fire teams had their leaders with earpieces in order to receive leadership direction to best optimise their battle strength.

Both subdivision and chain of command followed the method used by the former army, which allowed for the best optimisation of their battle power.

All fireteams and squads would battle for two hours and twelve hours respectively before switching out with another one which was well rested so that they could also rest. This was made possible because of the lrge army number and the amount of hunters there which lessened the pressure on them.

Giant mechs and AI or remote controlled robots with different designs and tamed beasts were also on the list of soldiers participating in this battle.

All creatures on this planet, no matter the type, absolutely hated any creature tainted by the madness, handling anyone that they saw with extreme prejudice.

The humans used this to their advantage and also started taming and using beasts to track and hunt infected.

Speedsters were also on abundance on the field which allowed those who were in dire need of assistance or severely injured to get the needed help, thereby reducing casualties.

This method of battle, nicknamed the 'millstone chainsaw', was what allowed the humans to survive even though their numbers were less than those of the vestiges.

They would continue like this for days and slowly grind out the waves of low level ones with their low leveled soldiers.

The students were unable to participate in the battle for now as their coordination with the experienced hunters and soldiers would actually do more harm than good in this situation, so they could only sit back and watch in awe as the soldiers battled with little to no casualties.

Some of them even started discussing among themselves and making small talk, even having arguments on who was the stronger fighter amongst the people on the ground.

"If this is all that monster battles take then I don't need to even worry about my life or anything at all", one student even said.

"Kill that idea right this instant. The battle has just begun.", Arthur, who heard those words, said in reply. The usually grinning guy was devoid of his usual playfulness in this situation as his face had a serious and pondering look on his face.

"He's right boy.", Orion also took this chance to speak."This is just the canon fodder of the wave. The strongest of the tier ones and the tier two's who are even stronger than them have yet to make their appearance. That would be when the real battle starts."

No later than two minutes after he said those words, on the sixth day after the battle started, a change took over one side of the battlefield.

The soldiers were beginning to be pushed back when a monster -resembling a rat the size of an elephant but with mouths that spewed a scalding and poisonous gas in place of eyes and a single eye on it's snout- came along, severely injuring two fire teams before a corporal-level soldier arrived to take care of it.

The speedsters came to pick those people up and sent them to the back lines to get treated while one of the squads that had a defense focused combatant and a party of hunters came along to fill up the now empty place.

This wasn't a one-off thing as it started happening with more frequency throughout the battlefield in the following hours as more and more people were taken out of commision with different types of injuries, gradually filling up and almost overloading the healers with their quantity.

The colonel and above level soldiers also started to get more involved in order to minimise casualties while they left the weaker ones for the normal soldiers to deal with.

The student that said those words immediately regretted saying them as he took a step back and swallowed audibly when he saw this scene.

"This isn't even the strongest that this wave has to offer but just the strongest tier ones on the field. Watch closely as the tier two's are about to make their appearance".

A minute passed before another major change took hold of the battlefield. in the distance, on one small area of the field of space and heat, there was a rapid drop in temperature.

Because of the intense heat in the space within the force field, the air was burning and giving of a light bright enough to light up the night sky but they quickly noticed that the light being given of was begining to dull.

The students attention was brought to one side of the barrier where little golems that looked to be made of ice were rushing into one particular spot on the shield and rapidly cooling that part of it down until it started to even freeze over.

This kind of thing was happening all around the shield at different points with different elements, weakening the shield until some parts of it couldn't hold up and started to break down.

Bofore they could even repair themselves bigger and more powerful vestiges started to pour in from the holes, anouncing the arrival of the tier two's.
