I turned left in the bend of the hallway, found the evidence room door, and typed in the code. No way could I forget it since it'd been smacked over my head again and again. Inside, I easily found the ring in the correct cardboard box and then pocketed it. It weighed like a heavy stone, dragging me down with guilt. I didn't want to steal it, but I didn't know any other way to prevent Detective Palmer from stealing it.
When I exited, another door two down from mine echoed the closing click. Striding out of that room was Detective Palmer himself. Even though he'd just left the building. Or had he? When he left, he hadn't been wearing his suit jacket. Now, he was.
When his gunmetal eyes landed on mine, my stomach twisted with doubts.
Because I was super lame under pressure, I waved awkwardly. "Fancy seeing you here."
