Chapter 17: The Emissary

Charlotte's POV

PRESENT DAY

I owed my sister a visit. I hadn't seen her since I'd been released from the hospital, and I had to admit, I missed her, along with my two nephews and her husband, Ryan. I hadn't seen my nephews or Ryan since the day before I was committed, when we had all gone out to lunch together.

It was at an extremely fancy restaurant, the type I could never have afforded on a librarian's salary, but to them it was no big deal. I guess when both you and your spouse are lawyers it isn't, but I never got entirely used to the decadence of those visits. To me, ordering pizza was an extravagance. Getting fries on the side was almost too much luxury for me to break even that month. I allowed myself to wonder, briefly, what it might be like to be part of a two income household. It sounded nice. Really nice.
