The main character is focused on becoming strong, but he has family and friends that he wants to protect as well.
The main character has a dark past and has to grapple with it throughout the story. The mana and Magic of the world has a lot to do with emotions.

Surviving An Apocalypse

Zane was far slower than us, so we had to keep pace with him, but we still reached Dallas within twenty minutes. Another Ten minutes and Zane led us to where the skyscraper was. Sure enough, there was a big ass hole in the side of the building.

Zane pointed at the hole. "Yep, that's the place. I don't know how you're going to get up there though…"

I smiled. "Stay here Zane and make sure a dragon doesn't get your ass."

I turned to Susan and Tim. "Y'all ready?"

They nodded and I transformed my ring into a sword. With that, we bent our legs down far and then jumped extraordinarily high- all the way up to the hole.

Inside the hole, the building was a mess. Desks were crushed, ruined papers were scattered like litter, and rubble from the initial hole was everywhere. At the very center of the mess, there were five dragons sleeping all grouped together nicely. I did not see Tessa or Jason though.
