CHAPTER SIXTEEN

She couldn't eat.

She lay in bed, deep in thought.

Richard had tried to make her eat, but she refused.

Later, after Jessica had gone to bed, he joined her."Jessica said he was disguised as a school cleaner to capture her"

Tears filled her eyes. "It's my fault. The killer kidnapped Jessica and left her on the highway." She showed him the message on her phone.

"What do you plan to do now?"

"I don't think the killer is a student. A student wouldn't be able to come and go without being noticed. If he was a day student, he wouldn't have access to kill those girls at night. He isn't a student."

"Then who is he?"

"He might be a staff member at Saint High. Maybe a security guard or someone who works with the boarders."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"What do you plan to do now?"

"I'm not investigating anymore. I'm staying home."

He gasped. "You're giving up?"

"I almost lost my only child! Fred can find them himself. I can't risk my daughter's life anymore."

Anna refused to answer Theresa's calls.

She was done with Saint High.

She distanced herself from her friend and Fred, focusing on her duties as a wife.

As she was ironing Richard's shirt for tomorrow, she heard a knock at the door.

She checked—it was Fred.

What was he doing at her house?

She reluctantly opened the door.

He observed her. "How have you been, Anna?"

"Fine. How were the final exams for the students?"

"Their WAEC exams went well. They'll do the mandatory GCE in November." He replied formally.

She nodded with little interest."Aren't you going to let me in?"

"No, please," she said sternly.

"Aren't you going to ask if there have been any more deaths?"

"I really don't care, Fred."

"I heard about Jessica. That must have shocked you."

She looked away."Anita had the full password to the phone—the one with the anti-theft device."

Suddenly interested, she asked, "Did you find anything?"

"The call logs show Alex was the last person the deceased communicated with. He's in the questioning room, refusing to talk until he sees you."

If Alex was the last person she had spoken to...Anna intently watched the tape, contemplating the possibility that Alex, the school headboy, could be the killer.

At Saint High, only prefects were allowed to inspect the school after night classes, and this inspection could go beyond the premises.

The next morning, as she dressed in her official outfit, her pregnancy was subtly visible under her sundress.

Surprisingly, Richard, impressed, embraced her and kissed her hair. "My beautiful wife still has a passion for those children, just as I expected."

She was surprised.

She thought he would stop her because she was pregnant. "You won't stop me?"

He chuckled. "At first, I didn't like the idea, but I realized my wife is very skilled. This is your strength. Go for it."

She smiled. "I know God will protect us because we are His children."

She had learned one thing...

God protects His children.
