Unexpected Fortune

After listening to Sam, I had an idea. It seemed I needed to thoroughly investigate who had extended a helping hand to George.

"It seems George's luck hasn't run out yet," I said nonchalantly to Sam.

"Exactly! Otherwise, he'd really be in trouble. Now, with most of his current projects nearly finished, he confidently announced in meetings that he'll be shifting his focus elsewhere to avoid competition!" Sam nodded. "He's doing fine now and is busy preparing materials."

"I heard his mother is ill," I mentioned offhandedly.

"Yes, not doing well," Sam confirmed.

We chatted a bit more before I left the restaurant.

I couldn't help but think about Jessica Smith, my former mother-in-law. I steeled my heart. People who are pitiable often have something detestable about them. She watched as her son beat me and never intervened, so I should save my sympathy.

None of the Smith Family deserved my compassion.
