"Mom?" Jonathan said.
I opened my eyes. "Hmm?"
"Why are you sitting on the ground?"
"Don't feel like going inside." I glanced at my watch. Ugh, I've been out here for two hours. How did the time go by so fast? "How was your training session with your father?"
He sat beside me. "Am I ever going to get a power?"
My eyes softened. "Oh, Jon. You will. It just takes time."
"But I'm six and Ken's five! He has his power."
"Everyone is different. You can't rush these things."
"I know." He fell silent for a minute. "Which power do you think I'll get?"
"I don't know. Something that's unique to you."
"Like maybe being good at fighting?"
I rolled my eyes. "Is that the type of power you want?"
He thought about it. "No."
"What power do you want then?"
"If I had to choose I'd choose...shadows."
I blinked. "What?"
"I could blend into the shadows and make shadows capture people."
I smiled. "That sounds like a really cool power, Jon." Lloyd came out and I could tell he was mad. "Hey, Lloyd. Jon just told me the power he wants," I said the tiny warning obvious.
He gave me a slight nod to say he got it. "Shadows, right?" Lloyd said sitting with us.
I stared. "Did you guess or did he tell you?"
"I told him," Jon said.
"He told me while we were training earlier," Lloyd said.
"Ah," I murmured.
"Mom, did you want the powers you have?" Jon asked suddenly.
Surprise slid through me. "Um...I've never really thought about it but I love my powers because it helps people. I wouldn't change it if I could."
"What about you, Dad?"
"I wouldn't change it either because I would never have met your mother if I didn't have my power," Lloyd said smiling at me.
I made a face. "You hated me when we first met," I pointed out.
He shrugged. "You were a princess."
I shoved him playfully. "I was still a princess when we got together."
"True," he allowed. "But it was a short time after we got together that you quit being a princess."
"He's conveniently forgetting to mention I died and he went on a rampage," I whispered in Jon's ear.
Lloyd glared. "No, I just don't like thinking about it."
I smiled at him. "I know," I said softly. "But it did contribute to us getting together. And we should never forget about it."
"I remember everything about our past," Lloyd grumbled. "That doesn't mean we have to bring it up."
"Have you ever noticed how boring your dad could be?" I asked Jon casually.
He giggled. "You just now noticed?"
Lloyd stuck his tongue out at us. "Fine, team up on me. I don't care."
Jon stood up. "I'm going to go play with Ken." He ran off.
"So...how did your yelling at Nya go?" I asked.
"She repeated what she told you," he growled.
"That's fine."
"No, it..."
I held up a hand. "Listen. It's fine. I've been sitting here thinking about it and I think Jay just pushed her to the point where she needed to vent. I'll talk to her when she has calmed down, okay?"
He shook his head. "I don't think that's a good idea. She might hurt you again."
I shrugged. "She needs to let it out somehow."
"Then can take out her frustrations in the training room! Not on you."
I sighed. "Lloyd..."
"If you're going to talk to her bring Harumi and Skylor."
I scowled. "What? I need guards here now too? No. I'll talk to her myself." He opened his mouth to protest but I clamped my hand over it. "Don't," I warned. "I will not have people hovering around me. I'm pregnant, remember? Having people hovering around me all the time is going to irritate the hell out of me."
He shoved my hand off his mouth. "I just want you to be safe."
"If I'm not safe here, then where am I safe?" I teased.
"Not funny," he growled at me. His tail was whipping back and forth.
I reached over and brushed my fingers against his wings. "Chill. I'm safe here."
"Are you?" He murmured wrapping his arms around me. "The kids were kidnapped right in the part of the yard."
I made a face at him. "Are you trying to focus on the bad things right now?"
He made it so my back was against his chest and rested his chin on my shoulder. "I'm just worried."
"You're just overprotective," I corrected turning so I was facing him. I looked him in the eyes. "Lloyd, I love you but I can take care of myself."
He kissed me gently. "I know but I'm your husband. I'm supposed to keep you safe." He kissed me again.
I kissed him back for a minute then pulled away. "Yes, but you aren't supposed to be so overprotective."
He kissed me and this time I didn't pull away. He lightly nipped my bottom lip and I opened my mouth. His tongue rubbed against mine. "Ewww," two boy voices said.
We broke apart and grinned at each other. "I thought you two were playing," I said looking at my sons.
"We want Dad to play with us," Ken said.
I got off Lloyd's lap. I saw the quick flash of disappointment in his eyes and laughed. "What?" Lloyd grumbled standing up too.
"Oh, nothing. Just the look in your eyes."
He kissed me again then walked away with the boys. I went to our room and opened a book. I was just going to relax today.
