The Duty Of All Of Us

It had been four days, and the tension between her parents had not ebbed. When her mother called her for a private chat during her day off, Adela hoped it had nothing to do with that. It was not fun being in the middle of a big confrontation. She wondered if her mother wanted her to convince Lucia of something. What else could it be about? The only other time her father had gotten close to this was when Lucia begged him to let her go to boarding school because their mother and the queen wanted her to marry Prince Michael. Maybe their father saw the impending marriage and was against the union.

She wondered if her mother wanted her to play mediator in favour of her sister marrying the man she once considered to be her future husband. She hoped her mother had more heart than that.
