Rachel was practically bouncing with excitement as they arrived at the orphanage.
"I can't wait to see my friends, mumma!" she chirped, holding Bella's hand.
Bella smiled, but her nerves hadn't settled. She glanced at Lucas, who was dressed in casual slacks and a shirt, looking effortlessly handsome. Despite his usual intimidating presence, tonight he looked approachable—something she was grateful for.
Gabrielle was outside with a few children when they walked in. Her sharp eyes immediately landed on Bella, then flickered to Lucas.
"My Bella," she greeted warmly before pulling Bella into a hug.
"I missed you, aunt Gabrielle," Bella murmured.
Gabrielle smiled before glancing at Lucas, her eyes assessing. "And who might this be?"
Bella straightened. "Gabrielle, this is Lucas Costanzo… my fiancé."
Gabrielle's expression didn't change, but Bella knew her well enough to see the flicker of surprise in her eyes.
"Fiancé?" she repeated, crossing her arms. "And when were you going to tell me about this?"
Bella swallowed. "I wanted to tell you in person."
Gabrielle's eyes narrowed slightly before she turned to Lucas. "You must be very special if Bella agreed to marry you."
Lucas, to his credit, didn't falter. "She's the most special person in my life."
Bella felt warmth rise in her chest, but Gabrielle wasn't easily swayed.
"I've known Bella since she was a child. I've seen her struggle, seen her fight to stand on her own feet. So tell me, Lucas Costanzo, what makes you worthy of her?"
Bella tensed. "Aunt Gabrielle—"
"It's okay," Lucas interrupted, his voice calm. He met Gabrielle's gaze without hesitation. "I respect Bella. And I will do whatever it takes to keep her happy and safe. That's all there is to it."
Gabrielle studied him for a long moment before sighing. "We'll see."
Bella exhaled slowly, knowing Gabrielle wouldn't be convinced so easily.
Rachel had already run off to play, and Bella and Gabrielle sat on the bench, watching the children.
"You've always been like a daughter to me," Gabrielle said after a moment. "You know I only want the best for you."
"I know," Bella said softly. Gabrielle hesitated. "And you're sure about this?"
Bella looked over at Lucas, who was crouched down, helping a little boy fix his toy. Another child tugged at his sleeve, and to Bella's surprise, Lucas actually let them drag him toward the playground. He looked so much calm, like he have all the patience of this world.
Bella smiled. "Yeah. I'm sure but I also wanted to know what are your thoughts on this." Gabrielle watched Lucas interacting with the kids, something shifting in her eyes. "He's good with them," she admitted.
"He is. He is trying his best to be a good father to Rachel. He love her dearly," Bella said softly. As if proving her point, Lucas picked up a laughing Rachel and twirled her in the air, making the other children giggle and chase after them.
Gabrielle sighed. "Alright. If you are ready then I'll give him a chance." Bella turned to her, eyes hopeful. "Really?"
Gabrielle chuckled. "I can see he makes you happy. And Rachel likes him. That's enough for now."
Bella squeezed her hand. "Thank you, aunt Gabrielle." Gabrielle shook her head, smiling. "I suppose I should start preparing for a wedding, then."
Bella laughed, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. Lucas returned then, dusting off his hands. "I think I've made a few new friends."
Gabrielle raised an eyebrow. "Maybe you're not so bad after all, Lucas Costanzo." Lucas smirked. "I'll take that as a win."
Bella laughed, knowing that was as close to approval as Gabrielle would give.....at least for now.
