Chapter 45: An Unsettling Series of Events

As Angela lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, she still couldn’t believe her father had known about Cookie funding her law school all along. It wasn’t like him not to speak his mind, especially where his daughter was concerned. Angela found it amusing that her father thought money was the best way to punish Cookie, since it was so important to her.

Still, it was hard to swallow, she thought, turning over to face the wall. It was so unlike her father to accept money from anyone, never mind Cookie. Even when Angela was young and money was tight, he always found a way to provide for his family. He drove a taxi at night during the lean years at the ice cream shop. Another time, he took a job as a security guard, clocking out at 6 AM to grab a few hours' sleep before opening the ice cream shop at noon. Thanks to his efforts, Angela couldn’t remember ever going without food or necessities. He always made sure she had everything she needed.
