Chapter 611 Helping

"I know, hang in there, the doctor will be here any second! Hang on, Guan Sanke!"

Sun Jack anxiously looked back and discovered that the hover car bearing the Red Cross logo was about to arrive.

"By the way... did you happen to... get those... awesome shots... recorded?"

"Recorded, recorded." Hearing footsteps approaching from behind, Sun Jack hastily stepped aside to make room for the doctor.

"I'm the director... I even made an appearance... Shouldn't I be entitled to—-" However, at that moment, Guan Sanke's speech came to an abrupt halt, as his left hand went limp.

A doctor in a white coat quickly approached and knelt on one knee. A long needle emerged from his mechanical fingers and was inserted into the vein of Guan Sanke's wrist.

After a rapid assessment and emergency treatment, he turned towards Sun Jack and said, "The target is deceased; it seems he had not undergone DNA enhancement for some special reason."

"F*ck." Sun Jack, covered in dust and dirt, brushed off his clothes, his expression incredibly complex as he looked at the motionless Guan Sanke.

For a moment, he was so lost for words he didn't know what to say. Another unexpected death, but then again, considering it was Metropolis, it didn't seem that hard to accept.

He sorrowfully lit a cigarette from his pocket and took a puff before saying to the doctor, "There are no special reasons, because he had a grudge against the person who made DNA enhancement technology open source. Just collect the body."

Soon, Guan Sanke's body was stuffed into a blue garbage bag, left there without ceremony.

The medical hover car didn't have time to collect bodies, as they were incredibly busy right now. The entire city had too many wounded individuals needing emergency care.

As for the bodies, they could only be left where they were until someone was available to deal with them.

Facing Guan Sanke's death, Sun Jack was not so much sad as he was conflicted, finding it hard to judge what kind of person Guan had been. Human nature is nothing if not fickle, after all.

But as a ruler of the Utopia Federation, Sun Jack couldn't afford to waste more time, with many pressing matters awaiting his attention.

"Rest in peace, Director Guan," Sun Jack said as he lit three cigarettes and placed them in front of the body bag, then he turned and left the teetering building.

The earthquake provoked by TT Group, though it successfully stopped the Poet, had obviously been a Pyrrhic victory. It destroyed the foundation of every building and nearly demolished the entire Metropolis.

The casualties were massive, and this was even with the widespread DNA enhancements. Without them, the numbers would have been even higher, all necessitating rescue and tallying.

To prevent further enemy assaults, the majority of the survivors had been sent to the Spacecraft Carrier, while various issues kept Sun Jack extremely busy.

Especially with regards to the reconstruction of Metropolis, knowing the enemy could attack from underground meant that the new city would also need to include the underground in its authentication system.

After solving one issue after another and stabilizing the situation, several days passed. Sun Jack lay in his office, resting with his eyes closed, when Abu's voice broke the silence.

"I'm truly sorry about my brother's conduct. You know he was full of prosthetic body parts, and it's inevitable that a few would slip through. I offer my sincere apologies." As she spoke, she licked her tongue and wriggled her furry head out from under the desk.

"I don't need apologies right now, just follow the procedures," Sun Jack said, grabbing her fox-like ears and pulling her out from under the desk.

"Of course, by the way, how is Linda Linda doing?" Abu stepped in high heels behind Sun Jack and gently wrapped her arms around his neck.

Upon hearing the name Linda Linda, Sun Jack's expression subtly changed.

Switching to the medical department's Clone perspective, he saw Linda Linda as she was now.

Her battered body had been completely stripped away, leaving only her brain inside the culture vat.

To call it a brain might not be accurate, for most of it was damaged, resembling a piece of soft tofu that had been dropped on the floor, floating in a fixing gel.

"She's in a coma, and it's hard to say whether she's dead or alive, or if she's just a piece of flesh maintained by a bunch of machines."

"I've had someone check her brain. Some critical neural nodes were crushed, some memories damaged. With current technology, there seems to be nothing we can do for her now, ah..."

Honestly, Sun Jack wasn't sure if he should grant Linda Linda a release in this condition.

"Is that so?" Abu's beast paw, covered in red fur and padded with flesh, slowly slipped into Sun Jack's hair, gently massaging him.

"We can only maintain the brain's state in the tank for now. The medical department is still figuring out a way to save her."

That's what was said, but Sun Jack, with his extensive experience with injuries, could tell that if there were a solution, she would have been treated by now. There was no need to wait.

Just then, the door opened, and Tapai walked in. She glanced at Abu's hand sliding down Jack and slightly tilted her head toward the door. "Scram."

"Tsk." Stretching lazily, Abu headed towards the door, brushing past Tapai. Suddenly, she leaned in, planted a deep kiss on Tapai, and slid her right hand directly inside the other's clothing.

"Had enough? Are you some kind of animal, getting horny with everyone you see?" Sun Jack tapped the table impatiently.

Abu, pushed away by Tapai, wore an indifferent face. "The more critical the situation, the more we should enjoy life, Jack. That's the relaxed spirit of us Metropolis people."

Once Abu had left, Tapai approached Sun Jack and said, "The chip has been sent up."

"Uh huh." Sun Jack lit a cigarette.

"I showed them Linda Linda's current brain condition; they said they can reconstruct her consciousness and memories and upload it to Cyber Space, but they can't guarantee how much of it will still be her."

"Uh huh."

"Linda Linda is only hanging on because of genetic enhancements. With our current level of technology, this is as far as we can go. Unless we gain access to higher technology, maybe we could find a solution. Otherwise, she can only be maintained this way."

"Higher technology, easier said than found, right?" Sun Jack asked, not really holding out hope anymore.

"The Poet. If we defeat it, maybe Linda Linda could be brought back."

"Alright, another reason to defeat the Poet, then. Let's put Linda Linda's issue aside for now. Anything else?" Sun Jack asked.

Tapai nodded, "Additionally, Guan Sanke won't be bothering you for a while. Remember how Three Quarters borrowed our troops for assistance? Third Class has started to make their move."

As she spoke, a video appeared in front of Sun Jack's system.
