I glanced at the clock, noting the time. It was later than usual for them to come home. Maybe it was traffic or something unexpected at work. Or maybe it was just me, overthinking as usual. I just wanted them home- so I could help them unwind, to hold them close like we always did. They were my peace, and it hurt to see them working so hard, draining away the calm they gave me.
As my thoughts began to spiral, the door opened, and Devon and Chase walked inside. The moment I saw their faces, I knew something was wrong.
Without a word, Devon went straight to the bar, poured himself a drink, and downed it in one go. That wasn't like him. He always kissed my forehead when he came home, freshened up first, and drinks were rarely on their radar anymore. What had happened today?
"Fuck this shit," he muttered, pouring another shot.
I turned to Chase, my gaze silent, but asking all the questions I needed answers to.
