Cooking Fish
Chapter 115 Cooking Fish When Lucia returned with the sticks, a pile of fish was cooking around the campfire, some slightly charred at the ends. "Perfect timing! The fish is just about done!" shouted Aleshia, who eagerly watched over the food. Lucia moved to Aleshia's side while examining the fish nearest the edges and remarked, "Have these fish been gutted and cleaned?" Aleshia tilted her head in confusion and replied, "Do we not just eat them after cooking them all the way through?" After hearing this, Lucia stuttered, "Well, yes and no. Humans and other races similar to them usually gut the innards of prey before cooking to enhance the flavor." After thinking deeper on the topic Lucia added, "That is as far as I know." After considering Lucia's words, Aleshia decided to experiment. She took a few pieces of fish that were still cooking over the campfire and grabbed a rock she had been fiddling with to pass the time. The rock had been sharpened during her moments of absentmindedness, and she began to cut into the fish with it. As she awkwardly tried to cut through the cooked fish, she occasionally nicked her fingers. Although slightly pained by the small cuts, she persevered. Afterward, the stomachs and other organs of the fish were clumsily removed and moved to the side of the fire away from the cooking fish. Aleshia looked at her mangled pile of cooked fish, though a bit colder now because of the passage of time, and felt a sense of accomplishment for having done it herself. She had not even tasted any of the fish yet because she had been so focused on the task at hand. Now, with her mind finally free to wander, her hunger surged back with a monstrous growl. Giving in to the temptation of her stomach, she eagerly dug into the fish. Despite the fish not being as hot as it would have been straight off the fire, she was pleasantly surprised by its taste. While she could taste slight hints of an iron taste in the fish, it was masked by the salt and spices she had used for seasoning. When Aleshia finished eating her pile of fish, she glanced back at the campfire and felt a wave of sorrow wash over her as she realized the fish still cooking by the fire was probably all burnt. However, her sadness quickly turned to joy when Lucia presented her with a perfectly prepared and cooked fish.
