Chapter 39:- Last week in the rain part 4

"Huh? What? Oh right, I'm fine. I just remembered something." Konan laughed awkwardly, after being snapped out of her thoughts by Kana.

"Was it something important?" Kana asked, concerned after seeing the usually composed Konan act like this.

"Nope. It's nothing serious. Anyways, we should go to sleep, it's getting really late."

"You're right."

Both of them got up and went back to Kana's bedroom, and while Kana immediately fell asleep, Konan couldn't.

She had seen light coming from Kenshin's room, meaning he might be awake. "Maybe I should go talk to him? No I'm sure he's not.. I should just sleep."

But after a while of tossing and turning, she still couldn't sleep. She had to talk to him about this, at least once. "Oh screw it! Worst case scenario, I'll just tell him I was drunk! Or make him smell that drug and make him lose his short term memory."

Konan drank the rest of the sake from the bottle in one sip and slowly got up.

Her heart began pounding in anticipation as she went to Kenshin's room, stopping just in front of the door.

The light was still coming from under the door, but she hesitated for a moment. 'Is this really okay? Well, here goes nothing.' She knocked softly, before Kenshin answered.

"Come in."

She opened the door, and saw him lying down on his bed, reading a book. "Onee-san? What brought you here?" Kenshin asked, looking up from the book.

"Aren't you supposed to be asleep? What are you reading?" She asked, sitting down on his bed.

"I couldn't sleep, so I thought I'd read this novel I bought back in the leaf. Apparently it's written by the famous Lord Jiraiya."

"I see. Jiraiya as in, one of the legendary sannin?" Kenshin simply nodded at her question and put the book away.

"Anyways, I couldn't sleep either so when I saw the light from your room I thought I'd talk to you."

"About what?"

"Kana told me. About your secret. But you can trust me, I'm good at keeping secrets. "

"What.. secret?"

"Your past life's memory. She told me about it. Can I ask you something? How old are you, mentally?"

Kenshin's eyes widened in utter surprise and his mouth was left hanging. But before Konan could say anything more, Kenshin brought his face close to her mouth and sniffed.

"You're reeking of alcohol. Did you get mom drunk? You know that mom can't handle alcohol. And I know that she wouldn't tell you otherwise."

"What?! I.. no.. I didn't.." Konan stammered, before taking a deep breath to calm herself. "I didn't mean to. I just wanted to have a drink with Kana before you guys left. She just happened to get drunk and tell me. But enough about that! Answer my question."

"I'm 34, give or take a month. But why do you need to know?"

'So he is actually older than I am. That's good to know.' Konan thought while smiling softly. And then she began thinking about how she was going to tell him her feelings in a way she won't get rejected.

"Uhh, hello? Onee-san? What are you thinking?"

"Oh, right!" She snapped out of her thoughts and chuckled awkwardly. "Can I ask you a question?"

"Sure."

"What is your ideal woman? Don't get me wrong, since you're older than me, at least mentally, I feel like I want to know more about you."

"And that's the first thing that came to mind?" Kenshin asked, confused by her question. 'Although there were a million other things she could've asked, she just had to ask me this. Well I guess she's drunk so she isn't thinking much about it. I'll just play along.'

"Why not? It's not any less weird than your lover being reborn as your sister and you two actually reconciling in this life."

*Sighs* "Well, I guess that's a fair point. But give me a moment to think." Kenshin thought for a second before answering.

"For me, I'd say someone like you or my sister would be perfect. Smart, strong, skilled but eager to improve, kind, gentle, beautiful although that's optional.

And of course, they have to be more mature than me. Since although I shouldn't say this, I tend to be naive. And my partner have to be the mature one.

I'd say you fit that criteria much better than my sister does. She's stronger than me but I don't think she's more mature. We're kinda on equal footing on that matter.

You on the other hand, are much more mature than I am. Even though I've technically lived longer, I basically just lived my childhood twice whereas you've actually lived as an adult.

So that's about it. But you're more like a sister to me than my actual sister. Does that answer your question?"

Konan nodded, feeling happy to know that she's his ideal woman but also slightly disappointed because he specifically mentioned that she was more like a sister to him.

"What if I said I was in love with you?"

Kenshin's cheeks turned slightly red when he heard her question, immediately figuring out that she was basically telling him how she felt.

'Calm down, you got this. This is a chance to make her mine, and hopefully avoid her death in the end.' He pretended to think for a moment before answering. "No..."

Hearing his immediate refusal, Konan quietly criticized herself for expecting anything different. But she was brought out of her thoughts when she heard him continue.

"... is what I'd say for most people but you'd be a special exception." Kenshin smiled, slowly reaching out to hold her hand.

"I'd say that I would very much want to have someone like you by my side. But I already have another woman with me, one who has suffered enough solitude.

So I'd say that we can't be together just yet, but I'd convince my sister, she's an open minded person so she'll come around eventually.

And then, one day, I'll come back for you."

Konan's face turned slightly red when he held her hand, but she eased up when he told her he'd come for her. "You promise?"

"Yes. Akane will always hold a special place in my heart, but I always have room for you."

Konan simply stared at his dark eyes, slowly learning closer. After a moment to hesitation, she closed the distance between them, her lips brushing softly against his.

The light touch sent a shiver through them both, making both of their hearts race. She pulled back momentarily, smiling softly before leaning in again.

She captured his lips in a deeper, more deliberate kiss. One that spoke of the feelings she had been holding back all this time.
