Back home

Nikky walked towards the exit of the hospital, her heart racing with a mix of relief and uncertainty. Turning back to wave at Sunny, who stood by the doorway with tear-streaked cheeks, Nikky couldn't suppress her own tears of gratitude. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Shone, stood nearby, their faces reflecting a blend of joy and apprehension.

"Mom, Dad, is this our car?" Nikky asked, her voice tinged with hope as she eyed the sleek vehicle beside them.

Mr. Shone chuckled warmly, patting the car's hood. "Not quite, sweetheart. This one's borrowed for today."

"Oh," Nikky's disappointment was fleeting, overshadowed by the overwhelming relief of leaving the hospital behind.

They all climbed into the car, and as they drove towards home, Nikky's mind raced with questions and emotions. She glanced out the window, watching the familiar streets pass by in a blur. The silence inside the car was both comforting and unsettling—a stark contrast to the constant hum of activity at the hospital.

Upon arriving at their house, Nikky felt a mix of anticipation and trepidation. She had no memory of the place, yet it was supposed to be home. The familiarity of her parents' presence reassured her as they escorted her inside.

The moment Nikky stepped into her room, she froze, struck by the sight of it. The walls were adorned with welcoming banners and colorful decorations. A large banner caught her eye, boldly proclaiming, "WELCOME HOME, NIKKY, WE LOVE YOU."

Overwhelmed, Nikky's eyes welled up with tears. She turned to her parents, her voice choked with emotion. "Thank you, Mom, Dad. I... I don't know what to say."

Mrs. Shone enveloped Nikky in a warm embrace, holding her daughter close. "We're just happy to have you back, sweetheart. It's been a long journey."

Nikky nodded, clinging to her parents as if afraid they might disappear. "I'm sorry I don't remember... anything," she whispered, her voice trembling.

Mr. Shone squeezed her shoulder gently. "It's okay, Nikky. We'll figure it out together."

Alone in her room for a moment, Nikky took a deep breath and glanced around, trying to reconcile the decorations with her fragmented memories. She picked up her phone, fingers trembling slightly as she searched for information about diamonds. Her mind drifted to the ring she had found in her bag—the one Granny had given her.

*Knock, knock.*

Nikky looked up, startled. "Who's there?"

"It's Sunny, your bestie," came Sunny's cheerful voice from the other side of the door.

A smile tugged at Nikky's lips. "Oh, come in!"

Sunny entered cautiously, her eyes bright with unshed tears. She moved towards the study chair, but Nikky stopped her with a gentle laugh. "No, no, you can sit on my bed. You're my best friend, after all."

"I didn't want to intrude," Sunny admitted, settling onto the bed with a sigh of relief.

Nikky shook her head, smiling warmly. "Sunny, you could never intrude."

Sunny returned her smile, though it was tinged with sadness. "I'm just so glad you're awake. We were all so worried."

"I can imagine," Nikky said softly, her gaze drifting to the window where she could see the late afternoon sunlight filtering through the curtains. "I don't even know how to begin..."

Sunny reached out, squeezing Nikky's hand gently. "It's okay not to remember everything right away. Just take your time."

Nikky nodded gratefully, her eyes misting over. "Thanks, Sunny. For everything."

Sunny leaned forward, enveloping Nikky in a tight hug. "Anytime, Nikky. Anytime."

They sat in companionable silence for a few moments before Sunny straightened up, a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. "I have a welcome back gift for you."

Nikky raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Oh? What is it?"

Sunny jumped up from the bed and darted out of the room, returning moments later with a small, wrapped package in her hands. "Ta-da!" She presented it to Nikky with a flourish.

Nikky took it eagerly, tearing open the wrapping paper to reveal a box of beautifully decorated cookies. "Wow, Sunny! These look amazing," Nikky exclaimed, her stomach rumbling at the sight and smell of the freshly baked treats.

"I knew you'd appreciate them," Sunny said proudly, watching as Nikky picked up a cookie and took a bite, savoring the sweetness.

"These are delicious," Nikky murmured through a mouthful of cookie, her eyes shining with gratitude.

Sunny grinned. "I'm glad you like them."

After finishing a few cookies, Nikky leaned back against the pillows, feeling a sense of contentment settle over her. She glanced at Sunny, her expression serious yet hopeful. "Sunny, I have a favor to ask."

Sunny cocked her head, curious. "What is it, Nikky?"

Nikky reached into her bag and pulled out the diamond ring Granny had given her. "I found this in my bag. It's a real diamond."

Sunny's eyes widened in surprise. "Whoa! That's incredible. Where did you get it?"

Nikky hesitated, her thoughts racing. "Sunny, can you take me out tomorrow? I want to find out more about this ring."

"Of course, Nikky! I'd love to," Sunny replied eagerly.

"Please keep this between us, though," Nikky urged, a hint of worry in her voice.

"Absolutely," Sunny assured her. "Your secret's safe with me."

"Thank you, Sunny," Nikky said sincerely, reaching out to squeeze Sunny's hand.

As they chatted and laughed into the evening, Nikky felt a sense of hope and determination. Despite the challenges ahead, she knew she had her family and friends by her side. And with Granny's ring in her possession, she felt a flicker of excitement—a promise of uncovering more about her past and forging ahead into the future.

The evening passed in a blur of shared memories and newfound connections, each moment bringing Nikky closer to understanding who she was and who she could become.
