The Accident

The day started like any other. Riley kissed Adrian goodbye and left for the office, her mind buzzing with the list of tasks ahead. The traffic was light, the sun bright, and the sky a clear blue. As she drove, her thoughts drifted to their conversation the previous night, feeling a sense of peace and optimism about their future.

She was humming along to a song on the radio when a car suddenly swerved into her lane. Riley instinctively hit the brakes, but it was too late. The impact was jarring, sending her car skidding to the side of the road. Her heart pounded, adrenaline surging through her veins.

Riley took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. She checked for injuries, relieved to find she was unharmed. She glanced at the other car, which had also come to a stop. A man emerged, looking equally shaken.

"Are you okay?" he called out, hurrying over.

"I think so," Riley replied, her voice trembling. "Just a bit shaken up."

"Same here. I'm so sorry. I didn't see you."

"It's alright," Riley said, trying to steady her breathing. "Accidents happen."

They exchanged insurance information, both of them still rattled. Riley's hands were shaking as she dialed Adrian's number.

"Riley? What's wrong?" Adrian's voice was filled with concern.

"I was in an accident," she said, her voice quivering. "I'm okay, but I'm really shaken up."

"Where are you? I'm coming right now," Adrian said, his tone firm.

Riley gave him her location, feeling a rush of relief. She knew Adrian would be there soon.

Adrian arrived within minutes, his car screeching to a halt. He jumped out and ran to Riley, his face etched with worry.

"Riley, are you hurt?" he asked, his hands gently inspecting her for injuries.

"I'm fine, Adrian. Just a bit shaken up," she reassured him.

Adrian turned to the man from the other car, his expression hardening. "What happened?"

The man explained the situation, apologizing profusely. Adrian's gaze softened slightly, but his protective demeanor remained.

"I'm taking her home," Adrian said firmly. "We'll sort out the rest later."

Riley tried to protest, but Adrian was insistent. He guided her to his car, his arm wrapped around her shoulders. She felt a wave of gratitude for his protective nature, the incident revealing a side of him she hadn't fully seen before.

The drive home was silent, the tension palpable. Adrian kept glancing over at her, his worry evident. Riley reached out, placing her hand on his.

"I'm really okay, Adrian," she said softly. "It was just a minor accident."

"Minor or not, it could have been worse," he replied, his grip on the steering wheel tightening. "I can't bear the thought of anything happening to you."

Riley's heart swelled at his words. She realized how much he truly cared for her, his concern genuine and deep.

When they arrived home, Adrian guided Riley inside, insisting she rest on the couch. He brought her a glass of water and sat beside her, his eyes never leaving her.

"Adrian, you don't need to fuss over me," Riley said with a small smile. "I'm really alright."

"I know, but I can't help it," he admitted, his voice softening. "Seeing you like that... it scared me."

Riley reached out, taking his hand in hers. "Thank you for being there. It means a lot to me."

Adrian's gaze softened, his thumb gently stroking the back of her hand. "I'll always be here for you, Riley. No matter what."
