Chapter 2: Run! They've got got BIKES!!
"...Andrea...Andrea can you hear me? What's going on out there? Are you okay?" Luca's voice sounded through the earpiece. Oh thank God. My comms were back online. "Heyyyy, Luke, nice of you to check in." I joked frustrated. "This isn't the time to joke around Andrea! What's the situation out there?" Luca scolded. I sighed, of course he was right. Luca's always right. It wouldn't kill him to be chill for once though.
"Well... you'll be happy to know that I retrieved all the data and files from their database." I said feeling awfully proud of myself now that my life isn't at the near risk of coming to an end. "You stalled a bit at the beginning. Anything else I should know about?" Luca asked convinced the mission couldn't have gone as smooth as i made it out to be.
"Luca! Do you always have to doubt me?" I said and sighed in defeat. "I escaped from the base but was caught by a few unexpected guards on duty. I tried to knock them out and i did but one had already called for backup. I ran alot, used a smokescreen and I manged to knockout and ditch some of them. Long story short, I will need directions back to the van. I kinda forgot where we parked."
"How many are they?" Luca asked
"Well they were five and I think I knocked out three of them but it won't be long until they get back-up. I'm surprised they haven't..." I turned around to watch my back and froze; well not literally, I just stopped talking.
"Andrea? Andrea?! Can you hear me? What's that noise?" Luca asked frantically, I could feel the panic and worry in his voice. "They've got BIKES!!!" I screamed terrified. "How in the world am I supposed to outrun dirt bikes...with my feet Luca?!!!" I hysterically screamed. "Relax Andrea. Breathe in and out." Luke said trying to calm me down.
'How can he be so calm when his little sister is about to die?!Maybe he's looking to inherit uncle's wealth. Nah, that can't be it, Luca's not the materialistic type.
"Just take a left turn. The path there is rocky and muddy, so it's hard for bikes to drive on, it should slow them down." Luca's voice sounded through my earpiece breaking my train of thought. I immediately obeyed, running faster than I ever have in my entire life and honestly, I'm surprised that my legs haven't failed yet. Not that I don't have faith in my muscular strength and endurance or anything.
On another note, Luca was right. This path is horrible; there are a bunch of logs, twigs, mud puddles and rocks lying on the floor. And I'm pretty sure I saw a few snakes too. They won't come near me right? It was like a swamp home of a swamp monster straight from the movies.
And just as Luca had predicted, the men were indeed slowed down. Those that got their bikes stuck, abandoned their bikes to continue to chase me on foot while the others turned around to follow another road. I ran straight forward not looking back once until I made my way through the forest mud path. And just as as I got out of the horribly messy path, the van screeched to a halt beside me with Luca and the others inside. "Get in." Matthew called out, well he didn't have to tell me twice. I practically leapt into the van. "Hurry up and drive Luke! They're catching up." Maya yelled. Luca stomped on the accelerator and we began moving.
"Matt pass me a gun." I said panting between my words. "Remember aim for the tires only." Matthew said. "Yah, yah we definely won't want any blood on our hands." I rolled my eyes as I fired a bullet.
Don't get me wrong, I understand how big of a deal killing someone is- it's even against my moral code but if you've heard Matthew say that same sentence as many times as I have, you'd be a lot annoyed thus the eye roll. "Umm... Luke they're catching up. You might wanna go a little bit faster. Okay not a little bit, like a lot faster." Maya said firing another shot puncturing a tyre. "I'm trying to but it's hard to drive fast on a road like this without getting us into an accident!!" Luca sort of yelled as the van landed with yet another thud. It was as if everytime we punctured a bike, a new one with new thugs just appeared to replace them. How in the world were they catching up to us so fast?
I had to do something, It was finally, my time to shine. "Oo, Oo I have an idea. Let me drive" I excitedly suggested. "No, absolutely not" Luca and Matthew both answered, simultaneously.
"Well why not?" I whined. "Because you're a reckless, out of control driver with no respect for traffic rules and giving you the wheel is equivalent to having a death wish." Luca answered. "And plus how are you going to drive any faster than him? Your legs must be tired after all that running. "Matthew seconded. To be honest they did have a very good point but, in retrospect, there is no way I'd let thus opportunity go so easily. So I had to make a equally good point.
"But... if we get caught because of Luca's not good enough driving skills, we're dead either way and plus accuracy... is not really my thing. We all know I'm not really contributing anything with this gun." "Your sister does have a point considering she's missed more than half of the shots she's fired." Maya added and I scratched my head nervously before giving her an unseen eye roll; I mean she wasn't lying.
"Fine" Luca agreed grumbling, and stepped out of the driver's seat while I got right in. "Okay everyone brace yourselves." I said in a sing-songy tone as I put on my seat belt and slammed my foot on the accelerator.
