Chapter 14: Touching His Chest

*Aiden*

I stood at the window of my office, staring out at the city below. My fingers tapped restlessly against the glass, a rhythm that matched my racing thoughts. Yesterday had been a whirlwind, a frustrating chase that led nowhere.

I had always prided myself on the fact that I could have anything I wanted. But this woman had proved to me that I couldn’t have everything after all. Why was she so damn elusive anyway? If I didn’t know any better, I’d think she wanted nothing to do with me.

It was maddening how she’d slipped away, leaving nothing but questions and an ache I couldn’t shake. I’d spent the entire day yesterday following what I thought was a solid lead, only to end up in a dingy cabin facing a ... big-boned stranger.

The woman who greeted me couldn’t have been further from the one I was searching for. Overweight and reeking of cheap perfume, she’d played her part well. But I knew instantly she wasn’t the one. My instincts never lied.
