CHAPTER 38: CONFRONTATION 4 – HER APPEAL

"Hehe, you got an eloquent tongue, I see, but can you swear with the heavens that you didn't cause her death? Yes, you did all those things. Took care of the family and if you wanted, you could have made a move already, but you didn't. I believe and know that. But Briar, if it wasn't _"

Briar didn't let Alice finish this time. If she did, then she would be doomed.

"Alice, can you even listen to your words? You call me out here, start calling me names, put me down and then you repeatedly beat me. I am not your servant. For crying out loud, I am not even your brother's real wife, but just a contracted wife. Must I suffer so much injustice just because I signed that damn paper?" Briar started complaining, listing the things that Alice had done to her from the moment they met.

Alice glared hatefully at Briar, wondering why she was bringing these things again, especially some of them she didn't do at all.

"When did I beat you?" she couldn't help but ask furiously.

Briar let out a mocking laugh as she struggled to stand up. It took a while and when she was on her feet, her legs were wobbly.

She raised her shaking finger and pointed at Alice accusing, "Do you have Alzheimer's at such a young age? Haha, you deny the things you did personally. And yet go around accusing me of things that I didn't do. I have been wondering, if I really participated in killing Selena, then aren't you sister-in-law, the person who saw all this, an accomplice?" with her back against the people she cared about, her face couldn't be seen by them at all.

So, Briar smirked at Alice, revealing her true face once again and seeing that Alice was so pissed off, forgetting that every time Briar showed such an expression, something would always go wrong.

The people eavesdropping, all looked at each other as it dawned on them as well.

"You … what are you saying?" Alice asked in a flustered voice, scared by the sudden accusation. "Who are you calling an accomplice?"

Upon hearing that, Briar even broke into laughter, startling everyone who was in the garden. "Alice, if you witness a murder, or suspect that someone is involved, the first thing that you do is to report it to the authorities. That way the perpetrator would be arrested and brought to justice!" while shaking her head like an educator, Briar stated.

"You_"

"But you didn't do that. You say that you saw me doing it and yet you kept it from your family, the brother that you love so much and yet you only remember him when you are short of money and having problems. You didn't even encourage your brother's children you claim to be so much in love with and care for. You let them be raised by this murderer for so many years. You kept the truth from your parents and sister. Don't you think that they would care as well?

If my relative was living with a murderer, whether it was suspicion or not, I would do everything and anything to let that person get far away from our side. Keeping that person by our side, what would we be seeking?" suddenly Briar started stating facts, rendering Alice speechless and guilt-ridden.

The people listening were all filled with mixed emotions. However, Briar was just starting and didn't plan to let Alice leave with her face. As for the people who weren't coming out to save her, but taking their time to eavesdrop, teaching them a lesson would suffice as well.

"I don't care how you see me, Alice. But from day one I have done what I was brought to this city to do. To take care of the kids and take care of their health. I have done that meticulously for years. For a decade, I have done so much even more than your family combined if we exclude the monetary aspect.

However, how can you even see that? In your eyes, I am just a nanny and a pervert who fell for your brother, and you disdain me for that. So, what if I love him? Is it a crime to love someone?

What actions did I take all these years against him? Never once did I deliberately appear in front of your brother. I kept my feelings to myself and took care of the kids. I knew in my heart even without anyone telling me that I am just a nanny and your brother is not someone that I deserve.

I know that myself, so why do you have to hurt me every single second you get to remind me of that? Since I knew that I could never get him, I put all my effort into raising the kids. At least if the kids grew up well, then my job would be done.

When you were busy thinking badly about me, I was thinking of resigning. When Lyra turns eighteen and becomes an adult, there won't be any reason for me to remain in your family.

I have dedicated my teen years and youth to the Meyer family. I don't regret every single second of it. But I am also growing. Just like how he has his family, I wanted to have mine as well. That was why I was going to leave and move far away so that I wouldn't see him or the kids.

However, fate was on my side. At a time, when I needed help the most, like a knight in shining armor, he gave me that contract. Although it hurt me to see that I was not enough to be just a wife like others, but the kind who had to sign a contract and get paid for it, I was still happy.

For the next three years, I will fulfil my fantasy of being married to him and having the kids I love so much call me a second mother. I never vied to be called their mother. I can't and won't be able to replace their mother, no matter what. Their mother would always remain their mother.

So even if I can't get his love, at least the kids love me the way I love them. And I will never have any regrets.

I won't deny my feelings for him in front of you, Alice. But don't accuse me of what I have never done. If you really think that I have any part in what happened to Selena, then you are free to go and report me right now.

Don't tarnish my name in front of the kids, Logan or Auntie. Even if you are biased towards Anna and want her to replace Selena's place. Don't do this to me. It's not fair. I didn't ask for this. If you must convince someone to divorce me and kick me out, then go and tell your brother.

Go and expose everything to him. Maybe he would also find me a villain and kick me out," letting out a dry laugh she deprecatingly said before adding, "After all, in everyone's eyes, she would remain perfect. A woman without any blemish!" her voice sounding lower and aggrieved as she added that.
