CHAPTER 39: CONFRONTATION 5 – I AM NOT WORTHY

Alice didn't know what to say, listening to Briar saying all that.

Honestly, this could be considered the first time that she and Briar had talked for a long time.

Her dislike for Briar wasn't something that started at the time she witnessed the confrontation between Selena and Briar in the hospital.

She didn't know what they were talking about, but Selena looked defeated at that time.

When she confronted Selena about why they were arguing, Selena took out a diary from her pillow and showed it to her.

It was at that time that she learned that Briar had feelings for Logan from day one and it took Selena fur years to figure it out.

After the diary incident, Selena's health started deteriorating and in just a week, Selena died.

If it wasn't Briar who killed Selena, then who did?

If Briar's diary hadn't been found and Briar hadn't argued with Selena, would Selena die?

That had been eating her for years, but when she listened to Briar's words now, she couldn't help but feel guilty.

Was it her bias from the start that made her look unkindly at Briar and just assume that she was the bad person?

Of course, there was the part that Anna loved her brother and she was the perfect candidate to become Logan's wife. She was Selena's younger sister and a relative of the kids. Wouldn't she make a good wife for Logan?

On top of it all, she was her best friend. What was wrong with her doing that?

However, Briar's words shook her a lot.

If she were to look at it closely, Briar was the victim here. All these years, she never said a word. Why?

Briar never did anything out of the ordinary and took care of the kids like the nanny she was. She never overstepped her boundaries. If she was like others, her brother might have thrown her away already. But that wasn't the case.

At this moment, Alice completely forgot about Briar's earlier actions, which were enough to make other people misunderstand.

Briar, on the other hand, seeing that Logan still wasn't moving, narrowed her eyes as she looked at the fountain a distance away from her and then at Alice, who seemed to be contemplating life.

Since they weren't moved by what she just said right now, then a drastic move needed to be taken.

She was a cat with nine lives. Losing another life right now wouldn't matter.

In a literal sense.

She looked at Alice as she started walking saying, "I know that I am not worthy of him and would never be worthy even if I get reborn," a helpless sigh escaping her lips.

Alice, who had been contemplating, raised her eyes to look at Briar, wondering what more words she wanted to say. She couldn't help but ask, "What are you trying to say right now? Do you want to give me another lecture?" feeling frustrated by Briar's earlier words.

Briar shook her head as a faint smile appeared on her face, startling Alice, and making her wary of what she wanted to do.

"I won't explain myself ever again! You do whatever you want. I just feel tired," she replied as she continued to walk, heading towards the fountain.

Upon hearing that, question marks appeared on top of Alice's head and she puzzlingly looked at the other for answers.

"What the heck are you saying?" However, moments later, Alice asked infuriatedly since she didn't understand Briar's words.

Briar stopped in front of the fountain, looking at the beautiful fountain flowing with water and looked at Alice with a smile. A genuine one instead of the fake ones she had been giving and said, "I have always envied you; you know!"

Alice was flustered at hearing that. She felt her cheeks heating up, all grievances completely thrown aside.

"You … what are you saying?"

Briar chuckled faintly at seeing how easily fooled Alice was, but this time she was serious. She added, "You have such a wonderful family. A big brother and sister who would do everything for you. They remind me of my older brother. In my family of five, only he cares about me. He must have suffered so much because of me," she released a deprecating smile as she thought of her brother, who had carried such a burden for so many years because of hers.

He must have suffered the way Alice did carrying that secret for so many years. If she didn't confront her this time, who knows how long she would carry it?

However, she was going to make this the last night, such a thing was going to be discussed. And it didn't matter which measures were going to be taken to turn this in her favor.

A girl must continue to preserve what she started if she needs to soar higher and further than this.

She wasn't going to let anything take her down, especially that irresponsible Selena who had been long dead and gone.

How dare she try to defeat her dead when she failed, when she was alive?

And as her eyes looked at the fountain, a smile blossomed on her face.

"I don't want to make the people I care about suffer anymore, even though this might sound selfish," she added, her words not directed at anyone in particular but loud enough that those still in hiding could hear them.

Alice, at this time, could sense that something was definitely not right. She looked at Briar who was standing in front of the fountain wondering what she was up to. At this moment, she had collected herself and thinking more calmly than before.

"What the heck are you trying to say?" she asked angrily, walking towards Briar to look at her in the eye and see what she was up to.

Thud.

However, just as she was taking her fifth step, her body froze as a loud thud resounded in her ears. Her eyes saw a scene that she would never forget and one that would always be on replay in her mind for a very long time to come.

"Second mother!"

"Briar!"

Tearful calling sounded as silhouettes emerged from the hedges.

At this moment, Alice's mind wasn't thinking straight. It didn't even click in her mind how these people could appear so timely like that.

All she could think of as she looked at Briar, whose body was lying facing upward, the fountain water red with the blood gushing from her head, was announcing her innocence.

"I didn't push her!" her blood was cold and her body trembling at the thought of being accused of murder.

Recalling how Briar had framed her a while ago, she was indeed afraid that her family would think that she pushed Briar and did that.

However, no one minded her, as eyes were on Briar, who was being carried in Logan's arms gently, his body soaked in water and blood.

On the other hand, Madam Meyer was shaking as she called the family doctor.

As for the kids, they were huddled together, crying as they looked at their father and second mother they didn't protect in time.

If only they had come out earlier, maybe she wouldn't have thought of doing such a drastic move.

Was it really necessary?

They had seen it with their own eyes.

How one second Briar was reminiscing and the next she just threw herself at the fountain, her head hitting the stone perfectly and falling backwards without making a sound.

Logan's eyes were red as he carried Briar back to the mansion, his heart and mind in turmoil as he blamed himself repeatedly.

If he didn't want to know and hear more about Selena, then this wouldn't have happened.

When he saw her walking towards the fountain, he should have emerged and stopped her. But he was too late.

He shouldn't have sensed it when she said her last statement.

If only ...

unfortunately, there was no medicine for regret.

As he rushed with her to the mansion, he just prayed sincerely that she would come out of this alive.

Whatever grievances were there between Alice and Briar, he was going to solve them perfectly and make sure that no such thing would happen again.

On the way back to the mansion, Alice was soulless. If it wasn't for her mother holding her, she would be on the ground.

On the way, she just kept on muttering, "I didn't do it! It's not me!" and Madam Meyer's feelings were quite complicated.

What kind of bad luck was this?
