CHAPTER 40: WHAT HAPPENED?

Total silence was what filled the hospital's private ward a few hours later after Briar threw herself at the fountain.

Until now, everyone could remember vividly how much blood there was when Briar did that. It was the scariest thing that they had ever witnessed and until now; they were all at a loss.

Logan's jaws were clenched as he blamed himself repeatedly for being heartless. If only he ….. anyway, it was too late to cry over spilt milk.

Now he could only pray that she would wake up no matter what.

Looking at Briar, who was connected to the machine after going through an hour of surgery after being sent to the hospital and recalling what the doctor had said, he couldn't help but look at his ashen sister.

If it wasn't because of Alice, maybe …..

He quickly brushed aside the thoughts in his head.

Before he could hear what truly happened, it would be unfair to sentence Alice. There should be a reason why Alice was so adamant to confront Briar and accuse her of those things, right?

His train of thoughts moving in that direction, Logan gave Briar one last glance and shifted to Alice.

"Alice, we need to talk. Follow me!" he ordered coldly, his tone not leaving any room for negotiation.

Alice's body trembled when she heard her brother calling her. It's been hours and, at this time, she had been nervous, not knowing what to do and how they were going to deal with her.

She didn't know if her brother would believe Briar and just sentence her to death when she had been wronged.

She didn't know which guts Briar ate to frame her so many times, even at the cost of her life. What kind of method was that?

However, for now, she could only follow her brother and hope that he would at least believe her or give her a chance to explain herself.

Madam Meyer looked at her children and exhaled a dejected sigh. She didn't know who to side with at this moment. She might as well let them talk it out.

She was going to accompany the children who had fallen asleep after bawling their eyes out a while ago. Besides, a miracle might happen and Briar wake up. She can't have her wake up to no one, right?

Alice followed her brother outside, and the two took the elevator to the basement parking and boarded the car.

Logan didn't plan on going anywhere, but he just didn't trust the walls of the hospital. They always say walls have ears, who knows if what they would talk about would stay in the room?

His car was the safest and he could be at ease discussing this sensitive issue.

Alice teary looked at her brother, sniffing as her body still shook. She might be hot-tempered and act strong at times, but witnessing an attempted suicide and knowing that she was one of the reasons why the person did so. On top of that, the victim happens to be her brother's wife and the stepmother of her nieces and nephew, Alice threw away all the notion of being strong.

For the first time in her life, she feared for her life. She feared Briar and regretted ever confronting such a person who was shrewd to the bones.

However, she still needed to exonerate herself before Briar wakes up. If she woke up and confessed her side and stepped on her, she would be in trouble. She couldn't let another person become a victim.

"Brother …. You ... I didn't do it. I swear!" the first thing she said upon opening her mouth was defending herself earnestly.

However, Logan just looked at her as if he was encouraging her to say more. She didn't know if that's what he wanted but as long as he didn't instruct her to shut up; she decided to spill everything.

"Brother, I can swear to you right now. I don't like Briar, but not to the extent of causing such damage to you!" she raised her fingers as she swore.

When Logan heard his sister openly admitting her dislike towards Briar, his eyes narrowed as he found this situation to be a bit tricky. However, he needed answers.

"Why don't you like her? What happened between the two of you? Just tell me everything from where it started and don't leave a single thing!" as he intertwined his fingers, he sternly ordered, eagerly looking for answers.

Alice inwardly sighed with relief upon hearing that. If she were in the court and standing in front of the jury, this would be the best time for her to appeal to the jury and hope that they believe her enough to not find her guilty.

Alice didn't waste any second and began to narrate the story about what transpired between her and Briar.

It was a story that spanned years, after all.

Alice remembered when she was young, around seventeen years old, there. It was the time when her sister-in-law brought home a thin and dark girl from nowhere. Just looking at her, Alice didn't like her. The girl looked like the kind that would bite its owner once fed in the future.

There was this mentality with poor people and she was afraid that her brother's backyard would be in jeopardy once that girl matures.

Fortunately, that didn't seem to be the case as the girl brought back, Briar, wasn't like what she expected. She was hard-working and kept in her tracks. Never once did she hear complaints about her making moves against Logan, mistreating the kids or doing anything behind the family's back.

Rather, she was very serious about treating Selena, though until now she wasn't certain why Selena needed to take traditional medicine. At the end of the day, she just knew that the whole family ate medicine at intervals and the medicine wasn't poisonous. She even ate it until that year when she saw Briar and Selena arguing.

It was during the third or fourth year after Briar started living with the Meyers and everything was going well. At least that's what everyone believed.

Briar took care of the newborn baby girl Tiana like her own, which saved Selena time and gave her more time to recuperate. Unfortunately, she got sick around that time, only to find out that she had ovarian cancer.

How could someone who was so fit and even gave birth to a healthy child suddenly have that kind of cancer? It was dumbfounding.

Nonetheless, Selena started getting treatment at the hospital and it lessened the time she spent at home and with the kids.

Alice wasn't sure what happened, but from what Selena told her after she saw the two arguing, was how Briar had been harboring feelings for Logan.

"Sister-in-law was so angry at Briar back then. I am not sure how the diary ended up in my sister-in-law's hands, but it vividly narrated her crush on you ever since she stepped into the house. She was even shameless to write in her diary about how sister-in-law's children were hers and so forth. You tell me brother; how could sister-in-law not get furious after reading such words?" Alice angrily narrated her eyes bloodshot red at the thought of Briar's shameless.

Logan, hearing that, was filled with complicated emotions. He never knew that the little girl had been harboring feelings for him for so many years.

When he overheard her confession on the first night they slept together, he was happy. He simply thought that maybe her feelings were newly formed, but who would have known that there was a decade-long suppressed feeling?

And the more he listened to Alice explaining, the worse his emotions got.

Selena decided to confront Briar about the diary's content and that's where it got worse.

Instead of denying her feelings, she openly admitted them and that led to a heated argument.

"If she hadn't harbored feelings for you and shamelessly wrote them down like a mistress, sister-in-law wouldn't have been agitated. Maybe she wouldn't have died back then. It was all her fault!" Alice at this stage was choking as she recalled how a few weeks later after that incident, Selena died.

She was doing well, and the medicine was working, so how could she die suddenly like that?

It must be the stress and depression which caused her condition to worsen, but not only did Briar reflect on her mistakes, but she shamelessly continued to stay with the family. Toyed with the kids until they called her mother and now, she dared to take the husband.

How dare she?
