Chapter 328: New Schedule and Arithmancy

In the morning, when Wade went to the Great Hall for breakfast, he received his new semester's class schedule.

His timetable was completely packed, incomparable to the relatively relaxed schedules of the past two years. Some classes even overlapped entirely.

Just for this morning alone, starting at 9 a.m., he had Divination and Arithmancy, followed by Transfiguration and Charms.

After an already overwhelming morning, the afternoon was filled with Care of Magical Creatures, Muggle Studies, and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Then, Astronomy at night.

In previous years, Divination, Arithmancy, and Muggle Studies had all been scheduled at 9 a.m. Since the overlap between students choosing these subjects was usually minimal, a slight adjustment by the school would be enough to accommodate most students' needs.

However, this year, due to the subject survey Wade and his group had conducted—and also because of Professor Abigail's influence—more students than ever had signed up for Divination and Muggle Studies.

Arithmancy, despite being said to be "predicting the future using numbers" with "bit of numerology", had instead been completely neglected.

After all, very few students genuinely enjoyed mathematics or considered themselves good at it.

Most young witches and wizards had never received a complete mathematical education, making the Arithmancy textbook feel like an incomprehensible tome.

Ancient Runes, on the other hand, was slightly more popular—largely because Wade, as a "genius alchemist," had sparked several Wizarding world trends, inspiring many students to take an interest in the subject.

Many academically strong students had chosen Ancient Runes, often pairing it with two other easier electives that were relatively simple to pass in their OWLs exams.

As a result, Divination and the previously unpopular Muggle Studies were suddenly overcrowded. Since Hogwarts couldn't possibly issue every student a Time-Turner, the centuries-old schedule had to be adjusted accordingly.

"Merlin's beard, Wade!" Michael exclaimed in shock after peeking at Wade's timetable. "So many classes! Is this some kind of punishment?"

Looking at his own schedule—which he had just been complaining about—Michael suddenly found it much more bearable.

Wade glanced at his schedule again and said, "It's not that bad… I don't have this many classes every single day."

His lightest day only had four classes.

Even eight classes a day wasn't too daunting for someone like Wade, who had once endured ten classes a day—plus morning and evening study sessions—back in his previous life.

Back then, even weekends had been filled with extra tutoring and interest classes. Hogwarts, in comparison, didn't schedule any lessons on Saturdays or Sundays.

Considering that not every class assigned homework and that the more demanding subjects typically only required a weekly essay, Wade quickly realized that his workload wasn't as overwhelming as it had seemed.

Feeling the pressure lift, he tucked his schedule away and asked Michael, "Finished eating? We should leave early—North Tower is quite a walk."

"Almost!"

Michael hastily stuffed the remaining boiled potatoes from his plate into his mouth, took a big gulp of carrot juice, and leapt up from his seat.

Michael and Wade had both chosen to take Arithmancy, so they headed to their classroom together—located on the seventh floor of the castle.

As they passed through the entrance hall, they saw Harry, Ron, and Hermione rushing in. Michael watched their figures disappear at the Great Hall's entrance, then turned to Wade and asked,

"If I remember correctly, Hermione is taking Arithmancy too, right?"

"Of course," Wade replied.

"Then if she's only eating now, she's definitely going to be late," Michael said sympathetically.

The Arithmancy classroom was near the library. To get there, they had to climb a flight of stairs, navigate a long corridor, and then ascend several more staircases.

Even if the castle's ever-shifting staircases didn't lead them astray, it would still take a good amount of time to reach the classroom.

But Wade simply smiled and said, "Don't worry, she won't be late."

"Huh? She won't?"

"Nope."

"How's that possible?" Michael asked in surprise.

"Sorry," Wade shrugged, "that's a secret. I can't tell you."

Michael stroked his chin and narrowed his eyes slightly.

"This secret… it's also the reason you guys can take twelve subjects, isn't it?" he asked inquisitively.

Wade smiled without answering, but his expression clearly confirmed it.

Michael didn't press further. He remained silent for a long while, deep in thought. As they neared the classroom, he let out a long sigh.

"I regret it," he muttered.

"What?" Wade asked.

"I should have chosen all the subjects too…"

Michael grumbled, "I originally thought the school would stagger the class schedules or have you make up missed lessons on the weekends. But now, the truth might be even more interesting than I imagined…"

"If you had to sit through twelve classes a day and do homework for all of them… I bet you'd last no more than two weeks before giving up," Wade said with a laugh.

He knew Michael all too well—his lazy personality had nothing to do with the word hard work.

Michael imagined himself attending eight or nine lessons a day and shuddered at the thought, and quickly took back his earlier words.

Not long after the two of them had settled into their seats, Hermione rushed into the classroom. She dropped her bag onto the desk with a loud thud, with an angry expression on her face.

Seeing her demeanor, Wade guessed that she had probably already finished her Divination class—

Just like he had chosen to attend Arithmancy first with Michael, Hermione had likely gone with Harry and Ron to Divination and had just heard Trelawney's grim prediction about death.

Their eyes met for a brief moment, and Wade instantly confirmed his suspicion.

Hermione gave him a helpless smile but said nothing. She even deliberately sat on the other side of the classroom, seemingly to avoid accidentally revealing any information about the "future Divination class" to Wade.

So, Wade simply looked away.

The classroom was sparsely populated, and by the time class was about to begin, there were still fewer than ten students present. Most of them were from Ravenclaw, Hermione was the only Gryffindor, and there wasn't a single Hufflepuff.

What surprised Wade was that Theodore Nott from Slytherin had also chosen Arithmancy. He sat alone, and quietly flipped through the textbook.

Before long, a professor entered the room.

The Arithmancy professor, Septima Vector, was an elegant-looking woman with thick black hair.

She wore deep red wizarding robes and a tall, pointed hat that resembled an upside-down ice cream cone. She spoke softly but clearly, with a serious face and no smile on her face.

"Arithmancy is a rigorous discipline that has been practiced for over two thousand years."

Her voice was gentle yet firm as she continued, "In this class, you will not be staring into crystal balls or making wild guesses from moldy tea leaves. Our methods are rooted in strict mathematical principles, using numbers to analyze personality and fate…"
