Chapter 329: Disappearing Friends

In the Arithmancy "divination" class, Professor Victor started by teaching the numbers from 1 to 9.

According to this professor, each number had a unique personality and color, corresponded to different shapes, and could be used to interpret the fate of any object, person's name, or destiny through a series of theories.

She also taught the students how to analyze their own names—

First, converting letters into numbers, then using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to derive three key numbers: the personality number that reflects one's character, the soul number that reveals inner desires and fears, and the social number related to external behavior.

For someone like Wade, who was skilled with numbers, this was no challenge. He quickly did the calculations and obtained his three numbers—

[Driven by an unyielding imagination and intense curiosity, you pursue both reality and fantasy, possessing extraordinary creativity.]

[Finds it difficult to establish close social relationships, dislikes complex social interactions, and tends to live in a world of thought...]

Horoscope reading? Or perhaps a personality test?

Wade looked at his "divination" results and remained silent for a while.

At that moment, Professor Victor walked over to Wade's side, glanced at his calculations, mentally verified them, and then smiled slightly.

"Your calculations are correct. However, the social number is not necessarily fixed throughout one's life. To interpret these numbers accurately, we must also consider current celestial events and time."

"Of course, that's something we will learn in the future. You've done very well for now, and I'm quite satisfied."

After finishing, Professor Victor nodded at Wade and moved on to check Michael's results.

Michael, looking a bit nervous, revealed his parchment.

Wade took a glance and was instantly speechless.

Michael's self-interpretation read—

[A determined and fearless warrior. Poor communication skills, prefers solitude, and is prone to suspicion. Will achieve great success in politics and become a dictatorial leader who enjoys giving orders.]

Not a single line matched Michael's actual personality.

Professor Victor mentally recalculated and couldn't help but laugh.

"You made a basic mistake, Mr. Corner," she said with a smile. "The letter 'M' corresponds to the number 4, not 5."

Michael looked down, realized his mistake, blushed, and quickly apologized before finally taking things seriously and redoing his calculations.

For Wade, his first Arithmancy class felt like a simple number game, with all the calculations never exceeding two digits.

Even so, his classmates continued to make frequent mistakes. However, Professor Victor was very patient—she guided each student one by one without losing her temper at anyone, no matter how foolish their errors were.

By the end of the class, Professor Victor assigned a simple homework task—using Arithmancy to interpret the names of three acquaintances.

Upon hearing this, Michael immediately had an idea and said on the way back:

"Wade, let me borrow your notes from class. Later, I'll check Hermione's results too—then I'll only need to analyze one more person's name, and my workload will be reduced by two-thirds!"

"I don't mind letting you copy," Wade said. "But aren't you worried about failing the exam?"

"Don't worry, I've memorized the key points and the number symbolism—I just don't feel like doing the calculations over and over again."

After saying this, Michael went to find Hermione to borrow hers as well. But after searching for a while, he couldn't spot the bushy-haired girl.

Yet, there were only a few students in the hallway.

"That's odd… Hermione is such a noticeable person—how did she disappear in the blink of an eye? Wade, did you see where she—Wade?"

Michael turned around and suddenly realized that Wade was gone too.

He froze for a moment and looked around, only to see Theodore Nott walking past him with a gloomy expression.

"Michael?"

Just as Michael stood there, confused, someone patted him on the shoulder from behind. He turned abruptly, only to see that it was Wade.

It looked as if Wade had just emerged from a side corridor. He now carried a strange, cheap fragrance on him and lazily yawned, as if he had just woken up.

"What are you standing there for? Let's go," Wade said.

"Oh… okay."

Michael followed along, feeling as if he vaguely understood something, yet it still seemed unbelievable.

When Michael went to find Hermione, Wade took a step back, making sure no one was watching him. He positioned himself behind a hallway statue to block others' view, then turned his Time-Turner back twice.

The dizzying sensation of traveling through time hit him again, filled with swirling colors that made his head spin. Wade steadied himself and saw that the hallway was now empty.

The cold morning light filtered through the windows, casting a lonely and quiet atmosphere in the corridor.

Wade didn't linger. He summoned his broom with a Summoning Charm and flew back to his dormitory to catch some sleep. When the time neared nine o'clock, he got back on his broom and flew straight to the North Tower.

As he landed through a window into the corridor, a lively voice rang out loudly:

"On foot, gentlemen and lady! Forward! March!"

Wade leaned his broom against the nearby wall, knowing that a house-elf would soon take it back to his dormitory.

He ran a hand through his wind-tousled hair and followed the direction of the voice. As he walked closer, he saw Harry and his two friends struggling to climb the spiraling staircase, panting heavily and nearly collapsing from exhaustion.

Beside them, in a portrait, a short and stout knight clad in armor sat atop a dark gray pony, enthusiastically waving his hand.

"Farewell, my comrades! If ever you are in need of a noble spirit and muscles of steel, do not forget to call upon Sir Cadogan!"

Harry and the others were too exhausted to respond. They simply watched as the knight rode out of the painting—only to see Wade coming up the stairs from below.

"Good morning, everyone!" Wade greeted them cheerfully.

The Divination classroom was hidden; it only revealed itself when class began. At the right time, a trapdoor in the ceiling would swing open, and a silver ladder would descend, leading them up to their classroom.

Even in the middle of the day, the classroom remained shrouded in heavy curtains. Numerous deep red candles, each covered with a matching red lampshade, casted a stifling crimson glow throughout the room.

The space was cluttered with small round tables and armchairs, resembling an old-fashioned tearoom on the verge of going out of business. The shelves along the walls were filled with crystal balls, teacups, and various divination tools.

Whatever Professor Trelawney had been burning in the fireplace filled the entire room with a thick, sickly-sweet fragrance—just the scent alone was enough to make someone drowsy.

Yet, some students found the atmosphere utterly enchanting, full of ancient mysticism—like Padma's sister, Parvati, who was currently gazing at a dusty crystal ball in the corner with eyes full of anticipation and admiration.
