The Police Arrive

Logan woke up late the next morning, around 11 a.m., spending some time in the bathroom before heading to the balcony to hang up the bedsheets. The bloodstains had been tough to clean, and it had taken him a while to get them spotless.

Knock, knock, knock.

The sudden knock at the door interrupted Logan's chores. He put down the sheets and went to answer it. Evelyn was lounging on the couch, watching TV and eating snacks, though she still looked a little worn out, bundled up in a blanket despite the summer heat.

When Logan opened the door, he was surprised to see Officer Warren Yan standing there with a few other police officers.

"Officer Yan, what brings you here?"

Logan asked, his heart skipping a beat. He worried that his secret might have been discovered and began mentally preparing a response.

"Nothing major, Logan. We're just here to ask a few questions about the mall incident,"

Officer Yan explained.

Apparently, one of the survivors had mentioned hearing the name "Logan" during the supernatural broadcast, which had piqued the interest of both the hunters and the police.

Warren had volunteered for this visit, partly because he and Logan had become friends after the gym incident. They often chatted and played games together online.

"Oh, sure! Please, come in,"

Logan said, stepping aside to let them in. He then turned and called to Evelyn,

"Evelyn, we have guests!"

"I'll go get changed!"

Evelyn replied, quickly tidying up the coffee table before heading to the bedroom, still wrapped in her blanket.

Logan offered the officers seats at the dining table, as he didn't have a couch.

"Logan, there's no need to worry. We're just here to collect some information,"

Warren reassured him, still curious about how Logan had survived two supernatural events unscathed. Was it sheer luck?

"Alright, ask away,"

Logan said, unsure of how much the police knew but ready to play it by ear.

"On the day of the mall incident, you were shopping with your boss—well, your girlfriend now, right?"

Warren asked, while one of his colleagues took notes.

Logan nodded. There was no denying that.

"So, how did you manage to avoid danger and get out of the mall?"

Warren's question made Logan's heart race. He knew he would need to improvise here.

"At that time, Evelyn and I had just stepped out of the mall. When we looked back, we saw the doors being sealed by black fog,"

Logan explained, pretending to recall the events.

"After what happened the day before at the gym, we were already terrified, so we ran home and didn't leave again."

Logan wasn't entirely making it up. Based on information from supernatural websites, places engulfed in black fog often caused electronic devices to malfunction, including surveillance cameras in the mall. As long as there was no footage, his version of events was safe.

As for why the supernatural broadcast still worked, that was thanks to the power of the microphone, Little Mic.

"I see,"

Warren nodded. Surveillance footage from the mall had been affected by the supernatural fog, making it difficult to gather evidence.

Warren marveled at Logan's luck and decided to be honest.

"To be frank, Logan, the reason we're here is because one of the survivors mentioned hearing your name during the broadcast. When we reviewed the potential visitor list, we thought it might be related to you."

"No way! That's terrifying! Did they manage to deal with the supernatural entity?"

Logan replied, doing his best to act like a frightened civilian.

"It's been taken care of. It was likely the same entity from the gym incident,"

Warren said, trying to reassure him.

"That's a relief!"

Logan let out a sigh of relief just as Evelyn returned, carrying tea for their guests.

With the questioning over, Warren and Logan relaxed a bit, chatting casually as they moved to the window.

"Logan, I've got to hand it to you. Last time I saw you, she was just your boss, and now she's your girlfriend?"

Warren teased, clearly a bit envious.

"It just happened naturally. We've been living together for a while,"

Logan replied with a grin.

"By the way, what have you been up to? I haven't seen you online lately."

"Online? I'm lucky if I get enough sleep!"

Warren pointed to the dark circles under his eyes.

"Ever since the supernatural stuff started, crime has spiked in the city! We can't fight the supernatural, but we can still handle criminals, so it's been non-stop work."

"That sounds rough. Why don't you stay for lunch?"

Logan offered, wanting to deepen their friendship and maybe even gather more information about the situation.

"No, I've got to head back to the station. We're on boxed lunches these days!"

Warren laughed, patting Logan on the shoulder before waving to his colleagues to signal that it was time to go.

"Take care! Next time you're not working, come over for a real meal,"

Logan called after him as he walked them downstairs.

"I'll hold you to that!"

Warren shouted back as he climbed into the police car.

Logan squinted into the bright sunlight, watching the police car drive away. A growing sense of unease crept over him.

He couldn't afford to stay complacent. It was time to take action, to grow stronger.
