Chapter 13: The Secret Passage

Selene’s POV

The delicate scent of lilies filled the air as I gently plucked each one, their cool petals a stark contrast to the warmth of the late afternoon sun. This day, of all days, I needed these flowers. They were my mother's favorite, a tradition on the anniversary of her death—a solemn reminder of the vibrant life she had lived.

I meandered through the garden paths, the tranquility only broken by the soft rustle of leaves. I was so engrossed in selecting the flowers that I almost didn’t notice Kate approaching until she was right beside me.

"Selene?" Kate's voice, tinged with concern, broke through my focus. She glanced down at the bouquet in my arms, her expression shifting to curiosity. "Those are beautiful. Are they for a special occasion?"

I paused, the weight of the day pressing down upon me. "It’s the anniversary of my mother’s death today," I explained, feeling a lump form in my throat. "I promised myself I'd visit her grave."
