The West Lake Arena is just a post-dinner pastime, and the Mystic Water reward can be considered a windfall.

But Chris wouldn't mind if such "windfalls" and pastimes happened every day.

It wasn't just about the loot or experience gained; Chris's observation and growing familiarity with his own Pokémon were crucial during these battles. After all, relying only on wild Pokémon to level up made it difficult for Chris to fully gauge his Pokémon's true combat potential.

In the battle between Frogadier, Chinchou, and Azumarill, Chris could truly feel the power of Frogadier's esoteric Cut move.

The level difference between Frogadier, Chinchou, and Azumarill wasn't significant. Under normal circumstances, it would be nearly impossible to defeat a Pokémon of the same level with a single Cut.

But Frogadier did it—and easily, with energy to spare.

Additionally, Chris noticed that Frogadier's speed increased when using Secret Cut. In game terms, it seemed the "priority" of the move had been raised.

Although it wasn't as pronounced as Quick Attack, which has a priority of 1, Secret Cut's power and effects made it an incredible move.

Chris's satisfaction with the esoteric Cut also raised his expectations for the other seven secret skills Frogadier could learn.

He already had Flash as a potential secret skill, but first, he needed to defeat the Dewford Gym.

After lunch, and after saying farewell to Amy and the others, Chris returned to the hotel and continued training his Ralts.

Since he wanted to challenge the Dewford Gym, which specialized in Fighting-type Pokémon, his Psychic-type Ralts would be key.

By the end of the night, Chris had trained Ralts to level 20, and it evolved into Kirlia.

[Kirlia (Psychic, Fairy)] (Shiny)

[Level: 20]

[Ability: Synchronize (When afflicted with Burn, Poison, or Paralysis by another Pokémon, the same status condition is inflicted on that Pokémon.)]

[Individual Values: HP (31), Attack (31), Special Attack (31), Defense (31), Special Defense (31), Speed (31)]

[Moves: Disarming Voice, Growl, Double Team, Confusion, Draining Kiss, Teleport, Psybeam]

[Held Item: None]

Kirlia was no longer the shy little girl Ralts had been. She now wore a graceful, white ballet dress, standing on her toes with her hands on her waist, exuding elegance like a professional dancer. Her most striking feature was her beautiful brunette hair.

"Kirlia~ (???)" Kirlia blushed and gave a small curtsy.

"Well, looks like your shy personality hasn't changed," Chris said, affectionately patting her head.

With all his team members now at level 20, Chris had achieved his "preliminary goal" of challenging the Dewford Gym once again.

Setting aside his handheld console, Chris enjoyed a restful sleep that night. The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, he set off for the gym!

However, upon entering the Dewford Gym, Chris noticed something peculiar.

Despite having defeated them before, the apprentices of Dewford Gym challenged him once again.

Chris, naturally, welcomed every battle.

The weak would only become more experience and money for Chris.

But this strange situation made Chris think… could defeated NPCs battle again? Or was it only possible with gym NPCs, or perhaps only the ones who hadn't yet beaten the Gym Leader?

He wouldn't find the answer right away, though. He would need to confirm it after his challenge at Dewford Gym.

Chris rushed back to face Brawly, the Dewford Gym Leader, once more. After a quick trip to the Pokémon Center to heal his team, Chris returned, this time equipped with the proper items for each of his Pokémon.

Unlike the Rustboro Gym challenge, bringing something like a Paralyze Heal wouldn't be of much use here. Instead, Chris equipped Combusken with a "Black Belt" he got from Shiny Makuhita. Frogadier held Mystic Water, while Kirlia was outfitted with a Quick Claw.

When Chris chose to challenge Brawly, the scene before him shifted instantly.

The luxurious hotel suite he had imagined transformed into a clean, bright dojo. Two rows of disciples in white training uniforms sat cross-legged with their eyes closed. The room was so quiet that you could hear the Growls of bird Pokémon outside the window.

While the disciples were serious, Brawly, the Dewford Gym Leader, was the picture of laid-back confidence. Dressed in blue shorts, black tights, and sunglasses, he looked like he had just come back from surfing on Dewford Island's beaches.

"Trainer, welcome to your second challenge!"

"I can see the fighting spirit in your eyes, but are you ready to face my unstoppable waves?!"

Brawly stood proudly with his hands on his hips, his confident aura palpable.

As Brawly said, this was Chris's second attempt.

Was he afraid of losing? Definitely not.

Why worry when losing didn't cost him any money? There was nothing to fear! Just go for it!

Chris had already grabbed his first Poké Ball.

The referee began announcing the battle rules.

"Trainer Chris is now challenging Dewford Gym Leader Brawly. Each side may use three Pokémon. No substitutions are allowed. The battle ends when one side has no remaining Pokémon."

"The Gym Leader will send out the first Pokémon."

Brawly pulled a Poké Ball from his belt and tossed it into the air.

The ball snapped open at its peak, and out popped a Meditite onto the dojo floor.

Meditite LV24.

Wait a minute!

Chris's eyes narrowed. He distinctly remembered Meditite being level 23 in their previous battle! How had it leveled up?

Could it be that the Gym Leader's Pokémon leveled up over time?

Or maybe the levels increased based on his own Pokémon's progress?

Chris recalled the fights against the Dewford Gym apprentices earlier. Their Pokémon had also seemed to improve since his last visit.

He couldn't figure out the answer just yet, so Chris refocused on the battle in front of him.

After a brief moment of thought, Chris threw his first Poké Ball.

"Kirlia!" Kirlia appeared, brimming with fighting spirit.

Today's goal was clear—sweep the Dewford Gym!
