The following day, the sun rose with an almost deceptive brightness, casting a warm glow over the school grounds. Alex trudged to class, the heavy weight of his dreams hanging over him like a dark cloud.
He could hear laughter echoing down the hall, a stark contrast to the chaos in his mind. As he entered his homeroom, he noticed a bulletin board plastered with posters announcing the upcoming championship game. The excitement was palpable, but Alex felt like an outsider looking in.
What if this is the last game we ever play? The thought sent a shiver down his spine.
"Hey, Alex! You in there?" Jake snapped him out of his reverie. "We're gonna crush it today. You've got to get your head in the game!"
"Yeah, I'm here," Alex replied absently, focusing on the teacher as she started the morning announcements.
As the day dragged on, he found it harder to concentrate on schoolwork. His mind was a battleground of thoughts, oscillating between the dream and the fleeting moments of normalcy around him. During math class, the teacher's voice became a distant hum.
It's just numbers. None of this matters if the world is about to end.
When the bell rang for lunch, Alex joined his friends, but his mind was elsewhere. He sat silently as they discussed their game strategy and plans for the weekend.
"Hey, Alex," Jake said, breaking into his thoughts. "You've been really quiet. You okay?"
"I'm fine," Alex lied again, forcing a smile. But I'm not fine. Not at all.
"Maybe you should tell us what's going on," another friend suggested. "We're here for you, man."
They wouldn't understand. How could they? Alex shook his head. "It's just... school stuff. Nothing to worry about."
After lunch, he decided to skip practice and take a walk around the park. The sun was setting, casting a golden hue over everything, but the beauty felt muted. As he walked, he noticed a group of kids playing soccer, their laughter ringing through the air.
Suddenly, a flash of fire erupted in his mind, the vision of the meteor burning bright against the sky. He stumbled, clutching his head, overwhelmed by the intensity of it.
"Alex! Are you okay?" a girl's voice pierced through the haze. It was Mia, a classmate who often had a calming presence.
"Yeah, I just... lost my balance," he lied, straightening up.
"You sure? You look pale," she pressed, concern etched on her face.
"I'm fine, really," he replied, though he could feel his heart racing.
Mia studied him for a moment, her eyes searching for the truth. "If you need to talk, I'm here. Don't hesitate to reach out, okay?"
Why does she care so much? Alex thought as he nodded. "Thanks, Mia. I appreciate it."
As he walked away, he couldn't shake the feeling that he had to tell someone. But the fear of being dismissed, of being labeled as crazy, kept him silent.
