Chapter 97: The Shadows Persist

The shattered orb lay in fragments, its dark energy dissipating like mist in the wind. Lysandra breathed heavily, the strain of using the crystal's power evident in the tremble of her hands. Beside her, Kael sheathed his sword, his eyes scanning the chamber for any lingering threats.

"Is it really over?" Kael asked, his voice filled with a mix of relief and doubt.

Lysandra shook her head. "Elara may be weakened, but I don't think she's truly gone," she replied, her gaze lingering on the shadows that still clung to the edges of the room. The air was thick with an ominous silence, as if the darkness was merely biding its time.

Suddenly, a voice echoed from behind them—soft, yet laced with malevolence. "You didn't think it would be that easy, did you?" Elara's voice reverberated through the air, her figure slowly emerging from the shadows once more. Though her form flickered and wavered, her eyes shone with an unyielding resolve.

Lysandra took a step back, clutching the crystal tightly in her hand. "You can't keep coming back, Elara," she shouted, her voice steady despite the fear that gripped her heart. "We destroyed your source of power!"

Elara's lips curved into a bitter smile. "You may have disrupted my magic, but I am bound to the darkness itself," she said, her tone almost mocking. "As long as there is darkness in this world, I will never truly be defeated."

Kael drew his sword once more, stepping protectively in front of Lysandra. "Then we'll keep fighting until there's nothing left of you," he growled, his eyes narrowing at the dark sorceress.

Elara's laughter echoed through the chamber, growing louder with each passing second. "Very well," she said. "If you wish to end this once and for all, you will have to embrace the darkness within yourselves."

At her words, the shadows began to shift and coil around Lysandra and Kael, whispering promises of power and immortality. Lysandra felt a coldness seep into her bones, a dark temptation calling to her. She could sense the darkness trying to take hold of her heart, offering her the strength to finally defeat Elara.

But Lysandra's thoughts turned to the people she had lost and the battles she had fought. She had come too far to succumb now. She tightened her grip on the crystal and summoned the last remnants of her magic, determined to end this cycle of darkness once and for all.

"Kael, we need to strike together," she called out, her voice filled with conviction. "Her power is connected to the shadows. If we can sever that connection, we might be able to destroy her for good."

Kael nodded, understanding dawning in his eyes. "On your mark," he replied, readying himself for the final strike.

Together, they moved in unison, Lysandra's magic flaring bright as Kael charged forward, his sword gleaming with a light that cut through the shadows like a blade. As they approached Elara, Lysandra unleashed a burst of light from the crystal, aiming directly at the heart of the darkness.

Elara's eyes widened as the light pierced through her, the shadows recoiling from its touch. For a moment, it seemed as if the darkness would consume Lysandra and Kael as well, but the light held strong, pushing the darkness back and enveloping Elara in its radiant glow.

As Elara's form began to disintegrate, her voice echoed one final time, filled with a mixture of anger and sorrow. "You may have defeated me, Lysandra," she said, her tone fading into the distance. "But remember this—darkness is never truly gone. It lies within you, always."

The chamber trembled, and with a final surge of light, Elara was gone, leaving behind only silence and the faintest trace of shadow.

Lysandra sank to her knees, the exhaustion washing over her. "It's finally over," she whispered, though a part of her still wondered if the darkness would ever fully release its hold.

Kael knelt beside her, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You did it," he said softly. "We did it."

But even as they embraced their hard-won victory, a chill lingered in the air, reminding them that some battles leave scars that never truly heal.
