The dust settled in the chamber, and Lysandra felt the weight of exhaustion pulling her down. Kael helped her to her feet, his grip steady and firm. As they looked around, the remnants of the battle still lingered in the air, and a sense of unease crept over Lysandra despite their apparent victory.
"We need to make sure every trace of her magic is gone," Lysandra said, her voice trembling with lingering fear. "If Elara spoke the truth, then we must destroy any connection she has left to this world."
Kael nodded, his expression resolute. "I'll search the outer chambers. There may still be artifacts or remnants of dark magic that could allow her return," he suggested, already moving toward the exit.
As Kael disappeared down the hallway, Lysandra's gaze fell upon the fragments of the shattered orb. A soft whisper seemed to drift from the shards, calling out to her with an otherworldly echo. She hesitated, the darkness within the shards reaching out to her consciousness, pulling at her own buried fears and doubts.
"Lysandra..." a faint voice seemed to call from the remnants. It was Elara's voice, lingering like a ghost. "You think you've won... but darkness is a part of you... You can never escape it."
Lysandra shook her head, her hands trembling as she gathered her strength. "No, you won't control me," she muttered, raising the crystal she had used to vanquish Elara. With one final surge of magic, she unleashed a powerful burst of light, incinerating the shards until they were nothing but ash. The darkness seemed to howl in protest before it was silenced, leaving an emptiness that stretched into the air.
Suddenly, Kael rushed back into the chamber, his face pale. "Lysandra, we have a problem," he said urgently. "There are more artifacts—far more than we anticipated. It seems Elara wasn't working alone."
Lysandra's heart sank. "You mean... someone else is still out there? Who could be working with her?" She could feel her pulse quicken as the realization sank in that their struggle might not be over.
Kael nodded grimly. "I found traces of dark magic that seem different from Elara's signature. It's stronger, older, and I fear whoever wielded it has far more experience in the dark arts than we imagined."
The revelation sent a shiver down Lysandra's spine. She thought she had seen the worst of what the darkness could bring, but if there was another sorcerer—one even more powerful than Elara—it meant that their victory might only have been a small battle in a much larger war.
"We have to find out who this is and stop them before they can pick up where Elara left off," Lysandra said, her voice filled with a renewed sense of determination. "If there's even a chance of more dark magic in this world, we need to put an end to it."
Kael placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, meeting her gaze with a fierce intensity. "We will, Lysandra. We'll find them together, and we'll put an end to this darkness once and for all."
The two of them exited the chamber, leaving behind the remnants of Elara's shattered power. But even as they stepped into the light, Lysandra couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking into a deeper shadow—one that would test their resolve and reveal the darkest corners of their own hearts.
The journey ahead would be longer and more dangerous than either of them could have imagined. Yet, side by side, they would face it with the strength they had forged in the fires of battle.
