Chapter 112: Hamilton

Incessant vibrations from Liberty’s backpack interrupt my conversation with Stan. I pull Madison’s cell phone from the outside pocket. Cameron’s name lights the screen.

“Hello,” I answer.

“Hamilton?” Cameron’s voice greets. “Is Madison there?”

I excuse myself from Stan and head toward the hall. “She’s with Libby in the restroom. We’re at a function. Can I have her call you back on our way home?”

As I emerge from the room, Cameron replies. “It’s pretty important. Can I speak to her for just a minute?”

“Hold on,” I instruct. “Delta, please tell Madison she has an important call.”

Delta rises without delay, entering the restroom. She holds the door wide; I see Madison and Liberty at the sinks. Delta helps wash Liberty’s hands as Madison returns to me.

“Who is it?” She pulls the phone from my hand as I mouth, “Cameron.”

“Hello?” Madison can’t hide the apprehension in her voice.

I watch as concern fades from her face, replaced by excitement.
