IN THE MIDST OF THE COMMOTION, Tommy tried to stay close to Tony to protect him. They had already lost sight of Benedetti and the others, and Rodman could be close by, at imminent risk of a surprise attack, if he decided to take advantage of the confusion to seek revenge.
Even though he was anxious about the situation he found himself in, trying to protect his boss, the young man remembered that his wife Katy was still in the library and that he would have to leave there, in the middle of all that confusion, or, even if he stayed in the building, he would have run the risk of an invasion of desperate people...
His head was starting to hurt, and he felt himself gradually losing his sense of space around him. He grabbed Tony by the arm as they swam through the sea of people and shouted, amid the irritating noise that echoed everywhere:
— Quick! We have to go back!
Tony quickly looked at him over his shoulder, while pushing away the people who were running out of control and replied:
— Are you crazy? Look at the hell this has all turned into! — My wife is there, in the fucking library!
— If we stay here, she'll be a widow soon!
— I can't let her leave in the middle of this mess, she's my wife!
— Then this is a good time for a divorce!
The two looked at each other for a second. Tony had a defiant, cold look that seemed to demand that he swear allegiance to the famiglia, before his own family. Disappointed, Leone let go of his arm and stopped, also giving him a look of contempt at his selfishness.
— Saluti! — Tony turned back to the direction he was going and continued his escape through the crowd.
The young man was saddened by this.
Where was the honor of the one he had sworn to protect?
He remembered a phrase he had heard as a child:
Honor to those who have honor...
HE STOPPED WHERE HE WAS, watched his boss abandon him and despised him with all his might, but before he could go to meet Katy, he could see a shadow appear in the torrent of people, in front of Tony, like a predator that appears to bite its prey. It was Rodman, fulfilling what he had promised, even sooner than he imagined.
For a second, Tommy succumbed to the reaction of trying to protect him, he almost drew his gun, but his pride was able to keep his hands inert and, resisting, he didn't do it.
Tony collided head on with him, there was no time to react, the barrel of Rodman's gun was already poking through his abdomen. Like a punch in the stomach, the bullet touched him. He only had time to look into his eyes, like a kid looks at a bigger kid who is going to beat him up. Two shots pierced his body in different places, as if they were coming from hell towards heaven, spraying blood into the air around him. He fell.
TOMMY DIDN'T EVEN HAVE TIME to blame himself, even if he wanted to, he wouldn't have been able to do anything. Everything happened so fast that he only saw Rodman's vicious gaze staring at him from afar, victorious, while his boss fell between them, unconscious.
