Chapter 231: The Red Thread

The three people inside the room exchanged glances. Then, in the ensuing silence, Yu Xie slowly stood up, walked to the door, and opened it.

With a creak, the door swung open, revealing Shen He standing outside.

Shen He's attire was different from usual.

Her silver hair flowed like a waterfall, naturally cascading down her back. She was dressed in a casual set of pajamas adorned with a white fox pattern, likely something Kitsune Saiguu had prepared for her.

The pajamas were loose-fitting, yet they couldn't entirely conceal Shen He's flawless figure.

"Yu Xie, you..." Shen He began but hesitated as her gaze fell upon Kitsune Saiguu and Chiyo inside the room. "This is..."

"Oh, Kitsune Saiguu and Chiyo said they had something to discuss with me," Yu Xie explained, then turned and walked back inside.

Shen He followed him in, and the four of them sat around the table. The atmosphere was quite subtle and awkward.

If there had been a mahjong set on the table, it might have eased the awkwardness.

"So, what were you about to say?" Yu Xie looked at Kitsune Saiguu and Chiyo, his gaze carrying a questioning undertone.

Kitsune Saiguu and Chiyo exchanged a glance, both remaining silent and not answering.

Asking for Yu Xie's opinion sounded simple enough in theory, but when the moment actually came, it was far more complicated than anticipated…

Moreover, with Shen He present, it made things even harder for Kitsune Saiguu to speak up, even though she wasn't usually someone who would feel intimidated.

Kitsune Saiguu glanced at Chiyo, signaling with her eyes.

But Chiyo's gaze wavered slightly, as if to say, "Don't look at me; I don't know what to do either."

And so, time ticked by in silence, second by second. In the end, Kitsune Saiguu still couldn't bring herself to say anything.

She took a deep breath, stood up, and said:

"I just remembered there's something I need to take care of. I'll head out first—you all take your time talking."

With that, Kitsune Saiguu turned and left without stopping.

Chiyo quickly followed behind her, giving a slightly awkward smile. "I also have something to do, so I'll head out too. You two talk."

Before Yu Xie and Shen He could say anything, the room was already empty, leaving just the two of them.

Two question marks practically appeared above Yu Xie's head. He could tell that Kitsune Saiguu and Chiyo clearly had something important to say, but since he couldn't read minds, he had no idea what it might be.

Their unfinished words naturally piqued Yu Xie's curiosity.

"It seemed like Lady Kitsune Saiguu and Lady Chiyo had something important to discuss," Shen He remarked.

"Yeah…" Yu Xie nodded thoughtfully. "But since they left, I'll just ask them next time. Shen He, why did you come to see me? Is there something on your mind?"

Shen He gazed at Yu Xie, and a fleeting, unusual emotion flickered in her clear eyes. She lowered her head slightly and extended her hand toward Yu Xie.

"This is..." Yu Xie was slightly surprised when he saw what was in Shen He's palm.

In her hand was the red rope that had always been bound to Shen He.

It was the binding red rope, specifically prepared for Shen He by Xian Yun to suppress the misfortune of her Solitary Star fate. As long as Shen He kept the red rope on her, the ominous effects of her fate would remain under control. However, the side effect was that her emotions became subdued and distant.

Shen He didn't say anything further. Instead, she gently took Yu Xie's hand and placed the red rope in his palm.

Holding the red rope, Yu Xie felt its weight.

It was as light as a feather, and there was a faint warmth lingering on it, as if it had yet to fade.

"Recently, I've realized that as long as I'm by your side, even if I take off the red rope, nothing happens," Shen He said softly, gazing into Yu Xie's eyes. "You... are like the red rope that binds me. So, if you're willing, can I stay by your side forever?"

Perhaps the simple-minded Shen He didn't realize that her words were tantamount to expressing her feelings, a direct and straightforward confession.

The night breeze drifted through the window, stirring Shen He's silver hair as it cascaded down. Her gaze remained fixed on Yu Xie without wavering in the slightest. She smiled—a breathtaking, heart-stirring smile.

Yu Xie froze, his thoughts tangled and conflicted.

Suddenly, he recalled something Xian Yun had said to him not long ago: "I've always regarded Shen He as my own child. You must never hurt her."

Yu Xie slowly clenched the red rope in his hand, and a gentle smile spread across his face.

At the mansion's main gate.

Kitsune Saiguu and Chiyo walked side by side, both looking a little dejected.

"Why is it that such a simple question is so hard for us to ask?" Chiyo's expression was full of regret.

"I don't know either. I'm not usually like this, but for some reason, today…" Thinking back to the earlier moment, Kitsune Saiguu also looked remorseful. "We'll just have to find another opportunity next time."

"Alright, I'll head back now," Chiyo said, stepping forward and gradually disappearing into the distance.

"Take care," Kitsune Saiguu called out, her voice filled with concern.

It was late into the night.

Most of Inazuma City had gone dark, with only a few lights still glowing here and there. The majority of households were already fast asleep.

Shen He had naturally returned from Yu Xie's place to her own room to rest.

Yu Xie lay in his room, still awake, when a strange feeling suddenly came over him.

He sat up, glanced out the window, and after a moment of thought, put on a coat and stepped outside.

The world outside was quiet and still, with no unnecessary sounds. Everything seemed to have fallen into a deep slumber.

During this tranquil hour, Rosalyne left the mansion. Avoiding the main roads, she walked alone through a dimly lit alley.

She took a few steps, then stopped, glancing back in the direction she had come from. Her eyes were filled with reluctance.

Am I really just leaving like this? Without saying goodbye or leaving anything behind?

Perhaps it's better this way. After all, she was no longer the Fatui Harbinger known as "The Fair Lady." She was just Rosalyne now.

Everyone had taken great care of her, and now that the storm had mostly passed, she didn't want to cause them any more trouble.

But she couldn't help feeling reluctant.

The thought of not seeing Yu Xie for a long time made her heart ache, the longing spreading and taking over her emotions.

Scenes from the past played over and over in her mind.

Yet, in the end, she had to leave. No matter how unwilling she was, it wouldn't change anything.

Rosalyne took another step forward, her footsteps light and almost inaudible in the still night.

"You're really leaving like this?" Yu Xie's voice suddenly broke the silence, causing Rosalyne to stop abruptly. Her expression wavered, her mind momentarily blank.

She turned around and saw Yu Xie standing right behind her.

Though the dim light obscured his features, Rosalyne could clearly tell it was him. He had come. He had found her.

"Yu Xie, I..."

"You didn't want to trouble anyone, so you decided to leave quietly in the dead of night while everyone was asleep, right?" Yu Xie asked.

Hearing her thoughts spoken aloud, Rosalyne nodded slowly.

Seeing this, Yu Xie didn't try to say anything to stop her. He simply took a deep breath, exhaled, and then smiled as he said:

"I'll come to Mondstadt to find you."

In the quiet of the night, those simple words felt to Rosalyne like the first light of dawn, illuminating the deepest corners of her heart.

She paused for a few seconds, then a radiant smile spread across her beautiful face, tears welling in the corners of her eyes as she nodded.

"Mm!"
