Moments after the young duo cleared well out of sight, several cars and helicopters belonging to multiple security agencies arrived and surrounded the former mountain.
They were made up of members belonging to the Sienna Metropolis Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security and the Bureau of Counterterrorism.
They set up a wide perimeter and round up the few terrorists who were lucky enough to still be alive. They were really astounded by what they were seeing.
The maps clearly showed a large mountain in this location previously but what currently laid before them was a smoldering crater.
The detectives and geological analysts had trouble trying to imagine what could have caused this level of destruction other than an intercontinental ballistic missile.
Upon examining the dead and the paralyzed lucky survivors, the investigators discovered that their bodies were covered in deep lacerations made by some sort of claws. It was a miracle that those who managed to survive were alive at all.
They discovered one of the surviving terrorists still conscious although paralyzed. the light in his eyes had died as fear had consumed him and he shook violently with tears and snot streaming out of his eyes and nose. He had soiled himself front and back.
The still conscious survivor said nothing but uttered one statement over and over, "The devil... it's the devil. He's come for us... he's come for us all!"
The federal investigators and detectives stood confused, alarmed at the terrorist's psychotic ravings.
The lucky few survivors were then all quickly transported back to the city via Heli carrier as they were currently, the only eye witnesses to this destruction.
The remaining corpses were wrapped in body bags, loaded into a truck and transported to the city as well for processing.
After several hours of investigating and snooping around the area, the detectives and investigators still came up blank.
They couldn't identify any creature that had that kind of fangs and claws as well as the destructive force capable of destroying an entire mountain.
Unable to identify the cause or causes of all the death and destruction, they decided to table the case for further investigation in the future.
They were satisfied with the fact that providence had delivered the elusive terrorist group into their hands.
......
Samuel flew Elizabeth back to her camp and snuck her into her tent, gently laid her on her sleep bag and covered her with a blanket. "The past day has been really crazy, hasn't it", she asked him.
"Yeah, it has been quite the experience", Samuel replied as he brushed her hair off her sleepy face.
"I'm glad I got to share it with you", she said as all her accumulated exhaustion from the stressful situation they were in caught up with her and she fell fast asleep.
Seeing her sleeping face, he smiled gently before exiting the tent.
After ensuring no one was around, he quietly snuck back out of the camp and flew away towards the sky.
As he flew away towards the sky, a male figure in the shadows observed him as he dialed on a phone.
"Yes Doctor...although their contact with the terrorists were unforeseen circumstance, everything still turned out in our favor. Both kids came out unscathed. It's all been sorted out now sir", the figure said into the phone before hanging up.
The figure, with phone in hand, stepped out of the shadows and was revealed to be Elizabeth's own father, Alexander Smith.
Samuel flew back home and exhaustedly crawled into bed, never speaking of the incidents of the day to anyone.
......
A week later, on the eve of Elizabeth's family's departure, Elizabeth snuck out of her camp and met Samuel in the woods.
They strolled under the stars, recalling all they had gone through the past few days, until they came upon an open grassy field in the mountains.
They laid on the open field, with Elizabeth on his open wing, stargazing silently. She soon broke the silence with an announcement.
"I have to leave", she said with a sad tone. "Sure, I'll see you tomorrow, right?" he asked with an oblivious stare.
"No, I-I mean leave-leave. My family is going back to the city tomorrow", she announced.
"Oh, is that so? So, when next will you return?" he asked in a hopeful tone.
"I can't really say. It took almost a year to convince my parents to allow for a trip this summer. It was actually a surprise that we came camping here", she informed.
"I am going to miss you very much", he said with a sad look on his face.
"Don't be too upset, I am sure we'll meet again sooner or later... someway somehow", she said trying to cheer him up.
"I guess we will", he said hopefully. "Well, until we meet again, I'll like to give you something to remember me by", she said perplexingly.
Before he could react, she drew closer, placed her hand on his shoulder and kissed him, taking him completely by surprise.
She pulled back after a few seconds and proceeded to hug him a final time.
"Goodbye for now", she said and ran off towards her camp, tears trickling down her face.
"Wait!" he said as she stopped and looked back.
"I promise I'll come find you. No matter how long it takes", he said to her with resolve.
She waved towards him and resumed running towards her camp, smiling amidst tears.
Samuel flew home in slight despair.
He couldn't sleep the entire night as his mind was flooded with thoughts of possibly never seeing Elizabeth again.
His instincts were hyper, trying to compel him to go for her but he forced himself to calm down.
He flew out his window and dove into the lake, taking a cold bath. After an hour, he flew unto the roof of their house and laid down upon it.
For hours, he gazed at the night sky until the first rays of the morning sun caught his eye.
"Today's the day, huh?!" he sighed as he got down from the roof and returned to his room.
He left his home a few hours later, flying towards Elizabeth's campsite. He was just in time to see their camper van driving out of the camp grounds.
From his position, he could see Elizabeth looking out of the window hoping to spot him.
He flew in a pattern he knew only she could recognize until she spotted him. She immediately, opened the window and waved at him excitedly.
Watching his little sister's action, her big brother's curiosity got the better of him. He opened another window and peered through it in the direction his sister was waving at.
Noticing him, Samuel gave him a smile and a wave as well.
Seeing the flying boy once again, Elizabeth's brother calmly withdrew his head, closed the window and finally collapsed onto the car seat.
Elizabeth saw this and smiled. Samuel and Elizabeth waved at each other with tears in their eyes until the camper van disappeared beyond the horizon.
With his fists clenched, Samuel flew higher into the sky and gave a loud shout, that transformed into a roar, releasing all his pent up frustrations as he recalled all their time together.
After releasing all his pent up frustration, he took a deep breath and sighed. "I'll definitely see her again", he reassured himself as he turned and flew back home with a resolved look on his face.
