Chapter 49: Eavesdropping

Today, curiosity had gotten the better of me.

My feet moved soundlessly across the palace corridor, drawn toward the muffled voices in the adjacent room. Theodore's low, commanding tone was unmistakable, as was the sharp, clipped response from Darla.

I knew it was wrong. So wrong. But the temptation to eavesdrop was too strong to resist. Besides, they couldn't possibly be talking about anything that interesting, right?

"Darla," Theodore's voice was cold, brimming with restrained anger. "How many times do I have to tell you to stay away from Isla?"

I froze, my heart skipping a beat.

"She's my daughter," Darla snapped, her tone defiant. "I have every right to see her."

"And I have every right to protect her from you," Theodore shot back. "You've done enough damage."

Damage? My brows furrowed as I pressed myself closer to the wall, straining to hear.
