"There was only him when I went down. I apologize for not bringing you the person who specifically hired me." Joel apologized for not bringing James. The latter was gone when he went to drag Moses to Dillon.
"Who was the second person?" Dillon thought he should inquire.
"James Roderick. He's best friends with Moses Lake. They've been best friends since childhood." Joel responded.
James Roderick. The person who Rachel went off with and who had Dillon beaten to a pulp and almost killed him.
As a result of that incident, Dillon missed days of work and later got dismissed from his job as a delivery man.
Dillon was yet to pay him a visit. But he didn't expect they'd meet again this soon.
"What do you think you're doing, you fool!" Moses asked, witnessing how Joel spoke to Dillon gently. He refused to believe his eyes.
He had heard about Joel. Joel was considered to be extremely ruthless and didn't care about pleasing anyone.
As long as he was offered money, he'd immediately become anyone's dog. But how much could Dillon have offered him to make him switch sides?
"Did James not pay you enough? I'll give you three times whatever he offered you to break this bastard's legs." Moses offered smugly. Someone like Joel worshiped money, so he expected the latter to grab onto his lap just like before.
However, much to his surprise, he was pressed to the floor by Joel as the man thundered, "Even if you offer to give me ten times the amount James Roderick gave me, I'd still be loyal to Mr. Grendel!"
"Mr. Grendel? This good-for-nothing is just a penniless bastard who's on scholarship at Yale University. If you think he's going to save you from the wrath of the Lake family, then you're in way over your hea.."
The word 'head' wasn't completed as Joel pressed Moses' head to the ground with the words, "You talk too much."
The room became silent afterward. Dillon drew a chair towards Moses and sat down facing him. "Moses Lake, I remember telling you you shouldn't bully or try to hurt anyone again the last time we met."
Moses seethed with anger. He was now afraid to say anything since Joel seemed to be on Dillon's side, and he had no bodyguard with him.
So, he could only think of the million and one ways he'd get back at the two for treating him like this.
"Feel free to speak to me." Dillon smiled coldly when he realized Moses was biting back the words in his heart.
"I'm the heir of the Lake family. Do you really think your words are capable of scaring me?" He scoffed, glaring at Dillon.
"The Lake family that you keep speaking of means nothing in my eyes and is just like a speck of dust I can easily wipe off." Dillon revealed, causing Moses to scoff again.
Moses was about to say something when Dillon shushed him, "What? I don't remember telling you you're free to retort."
Dillon's smugness was successfully hitting every nerve in Moses.
"Let him go." Dillon concluded and got up.
Joel stared at him in surprise, but didn't dare to hesitate as he took off his leg from Moses' back.
Moses straightened up and glared at Dillon and Joel, "You will regret letting me off!" Then he was gone.
"Mr. Grendel, the Lake family will come after you once he reports back to them about all you said. Do you need me to chase after him and silence him?" Joel asked worriedly.
Dillon glanced at him, "If they strike, it'll be an opportunity for you to prove yourself."
Joel quickly nodded. Dillon's graceful way of talking and acting only convinced him further, he was no ordinary person. Surely, he had found the right master!
Dillon glanced at Joel's men, who kept groaning in pain on the ground, and sighed silently.
He had made sure to break their wrists and legs, so they wouldn't get back up. Now he felt a little guilty since they were just following orders.
"Timothy, could you please help me pay for their hospital bills?" Dillon requested, turning towards Timothy.
Only then did Joel recall there was a kid in the room with them. He shuddered when he recalled Timothy had witnessed the chaotic scene that happened minutes ago.
In his experience, people from distinguished homes liked it better when their kids or younger ones didn't witness such violence. Doesn't that mean Dillon would punish him once this was all over?
"Sure." Timothy replied, then pinned his eyes on Joel. His eyes turned blue for a moment, which sent a shrill down Joel's spine.
He…also has blue eyes.
"Why Timothy? Why not me? I can pay for their hospital bills as much as Timothy can." Merlin, who thought the situation was unfair, suddenly complained.
With his eyes pinned on his phone, Timothy shushed, "Quit whining."
Outside, a furious Moses walked into his car and drove back to the Lake's family residence. As he stepped into the living room, he saw Jason receiving a massage from Matthew.
"James Roderick already called and told me he hired someone very competent for you." Jason exhaled, his eyes tightly shut in relaxation.
"The man he got for me switched sides. I don't know what Dillon Grendel said to him, but Rafter is now on his side." Moses reported.
Jason's eyes flew up, the tiny bit of relaxation he felt flying out the window.
"Rafter? As in Joel Maximus?" He asked to reaffirm. Seeing his grandson nod his head, Jason's brows drew together.
"Dillon Grendel must've promised him something better. But couldn't you have made an even better offer? What can a pauper like him offer that you can't?" Matthew asked, his brows coming together in a frown.
Moses stared at Matthew blankly for a moment. He was almost tempted to hiss. His uncle always knew when to speak and what to say to fuel Jason's anger towards him.
"Do you think I didn't offer to triple whatever that was given to him? I did, but he said he wouldn't even take it even if I gave him ten times of it." Moses couldn't help rolling his eyes at Matthew.
Matthew ignored his impudent behavior and turned his attention back to Jason. With a respectful tone, he assured his father, "I will take care of this situation, father. You should take your mind off it now."
Jason nodded. Over the years, he had come to trust Matthew's judgment more than that of his second son and his grandson.
A relative soon took over Matthew's previous action of massaging Jason's shoulders, and the man slowly relaxed once again.
"Don't think I don't know you aren't concerned about my father or me. You just care about pleasing grandfather." Moses told Matthew rudely as soon as they were out of the house.
Matthew didn't even bother to glance at him as he got into the Lincoln in front of him.
"The board of directors can refuse your ascension as the one to take over the company if this matter isn't taken care of. I wouldn't be helping you if I didn't care about you." Matthew said in a stoic voice once the car drove off.
"How old do you think I am? 12? You know you won't be nominated to take over the company if I'm not here and since you don't wish for the opportunity to be given to one of our relatives, you're trying your best to keep me as the heir. That way, you can continue to benefit greatly."
After Moses finished speaking, Matthew suddenly smiled and turned slightly to face him, "Since you know all this, do you also want to know what'll happen to you if you're no longer the Lake family's heir?"
"The numerous people you've suppressed over the years will all come after you, and don't forget it'll also symbolize the end of your luxurious lifestyle. You might even end up as wretched as Dillon Grendel."
Moses clenched his jaw tightly, his eyes darkening.
"You look like you understand, which is a good thing." Matthew concluded as the car came to a stop outside a casino.
Moses glanced outside and cringed at the sight of people smoking and doing drugs. He was so engrossed in his discussion with Matthew that he failed to realize the car had driven into the area where the police didn't frequent so much.
"What are we doing here?" He asked Matthew, seconds after feeding his eyes on the people.
"Rafter will no longer work with us. So, we need to find someone on the same rank as him— Castillo Red."
Castillo Red, someone as notorious as Joel Maximus. He also held the same power and influence in the streets.
Owned a couple of casinos and was often used by wealthy families to bury the cockroaches in their cupboard.
But that wasn't what made him the perfect choice. What made him the perfect choice was the fact he was Joel's sworn enemy and would jump at any opportunity to take him down.
