First Battle

"You bastard that was our target!" Said one of the gang members.

"I wouldn't let that happen." I replied.

"You got guts for a newbie kid... But is it enough to stop us? We're outnumbering you." As the gang member raised his bat about to hit me and the rest of them running towards me.

I ran underneath his vision and did an uppercut which made him fly as the rest of his friends come and try overwhelm me with their numbers. They fight like amateurs with improvised weapons using planks of wood and steel pipes. Their numbers isn't enough to deter me from taking them down. Punching and kicking knocking them back and them running back seems like they're not going down from a simple brawl.

Let's see if Overclock is useful in punching them. But let's not go too far with power.

[Overclock at half-power]

Alright, let's do this I raised my cuffs and clentched my fist. As soon as Overclock activated I delivered 3 blows each on the members two hits on the face and one on the stomach. For the bigger guys I added a kick to the head for good measure and returned to where I was.

[Overclock disengaging]

The gang members started to recoil back from the attacks knocking them out cold. I guess I'll stick to half-power for now that worked better than full power just a few minutes ago since that felt less stressful. And after that I took them under custody cuffing them.

Soon after Officer Weiss ran up to me to see what have happened. As he gets close I felt dizzy...

"Rook!-" Officer Weiss's voice faints darkness.

A few hours later...

I woke up in the doctor's office...

"What happened?" I asked as headaches occur.

"You need some rest for now Officer Rook. You overexerted yourself in your very first mission. Seems like Overclock was still overwhelming. How are you feeling?" The Doctor asked.

"Well I have headaches and I feel tired thats all." I replied.

"I see, is there anything you did to make that tired already?" Asked the Doctor as he wrote it down on his clipboard.

"I used my Overclock at full power to save a child within 50 meters and back. Then I fought gang members with it using half-power then after that I passed out." I replied while trying to sit up right on the bed.

"I looked up your log during that fight and seems like your heart isn't keeping up with the sheer speed you're going to." The Doctor replied.

"Can't keep up?" I looked at the Doctor.

"Yes, your heart can't keep up with your sheer speed where you're going at but I found a sweet spot where your current heart can keep up is within the 50-60% power of your Overclock. Seems like your heart rate and overall status during that time is very much stable. For the time being I suggest you keep it at those speeds for your safety's sake until you get used to it." The Doctor gave me his response and medication after that he left the infirmary.

As the door closed I heard it open again and saw...

"Hey there, hotshot. You're the talk of the station right now." Officer Tom entered and threw me an apple to snack on.

"What happened?" I replied.

"Well they were reviewing your bodycam footage and seemed took out a lot of gang members on your own in your first gang war. And they were impressed by your performance especially as a first time user of augments. Though what you did out there was too risky even for you. I know you have spinal augment as well, you need time to train with that unit kid. Or else you'll permanently injure yourself with that. I'll leave the fruits here and fully recover first before try training alright? Not my orders, not only from the doctor's orders but Officer Weiss's orders as well." Officer Tim left the infirmary with the basket of fruits next to my bed.

I guess I have to rest for a while before I get to training again...

A few days later...

I managed to return back into shape soon after fully recovering. I'm using the training facility of the station for me to train up using Overclock at 20% power at a constant speed so I would be more familiar with the difference of speed and transition to make it more seamless.

The Doctor is observing my vitals as I do laps around the indoor track and field area.

"You can go faster Rook. Raise your power output to 30%." The Doctor continue to observe my vitals.

While running around Squad 772 member, Weiss entered the observation room meeting the doctor.

"How's our Rook?" Asked Officer Weiss.

"He's been well adapting to his new augment. I guess his first time on the field made his ability to keep up with the augment made it harder to sync and as of right now I'm exposing him to extreme speeds to make him used to sync up with his augment, I know it looks a bit brutish but its one way to get used to it quickly." The doctor replied.

"I see, I understand that you're the doctor and know whats best for your patients. I can't believe he was trusted with a prototype of all things. It could be a blessing or a curse knowing its a prototype and that Rook was picked as a test subject. Maxtech, I wonder what they're planning with this guy." Officer Weiss gave his thoughts before leaving.

"Officer Weiss, before you leave. I need to tell you this." The doctor stopped Weiss of his steps.

"Hm?" Officer Weiss looked back.

"This recruit might be bigger than we anticipate in the force. You better keep an eye out on him, its for the best for both his safety and everyone's safety. As much as I hate to judge people we still don't have much info about his former criminal life. Only a report of his actions but from the looks of it he doesn't look like a criminal to me. Not one bit." The doctor looked forward at the window watching Rook run in circles.

"What do you mean by that?" Officer Weiss asked.

"You know I'm a former military doctor before I retired to this office job. Well office job meaning less stressful than the frontlines. I've seen what criminals do when they were given freedom. Rook's personality isn't aligning to that and he doesn't have that presence of a former criminal even." The doctor replied.

"Doesn't that mean the RTR Program worked on Rook?" Officer Weiss replied.

"No, RTR is more like an enlistment project than a rehab. They're still criminals you know but reformed just not fully rehabilitated unlike how its normally done." The doctor questioned Weiss's answer.

"You actually think Officer Rook is innocent?" Officer Weiss stared directly at the eyes of the doctor.

"It's just a guess Weiss... Rook hasn't fully disclosed what his sentence was about apart from what we know based on whats written in his report." The doctor replied calmly.

"I'll better get going I still have paperwork to do back in the office. I'll keep that in mind doc." Officer Weiss smirked as he left the observation room.

The doctor soon after went to the microphone to say something...

"Rook, you can stop for today I've gotten enough data for my calculation you can take a break now." The doctor announces to Rook .

"Alright, doc." I slowed down to a halt to take a break.

Surprisingly, I wasn't really tired. I checked my Overclock's status.

[Overclock level 1]

[Power set to 30%]

[63% Synchronized]

I'm surprised that I've gotten this much progress by just running in circles. But fights aren't really about me running around in circles so I need to exercise in different directions and different angles as well. I don't know if I should push it more or the doctor will force me to stop for today.

As the doctor entered the training area to tell me the results I asked him first about something.

"Hey, doc, can I ask you something?" I asked.

"Yeah, what's on your mind Rook?" The doctor replied while looking at his clipboard.

"Can I still continue practicing?" I replied.

The doctor stopped flipping pages and looked at me.

"Sure if you want to." The doctor did not argue with my request.

Seems like I could stay here a bit longer.
