Alexander leaned back on the couch, his eyes fixed on Anna, who had grown unusually quiet since Vivian left. Her earlier enthusiasm had vanished, replaced by an awkward stillness. It wasn't like her to be so subdued.
"What's wrong?" he asked, his tone casual but laced with curiosity.
Anna snapped out of her thoughts, forcing a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Nothing. I'm fine."
Alexander wasn't convinced, but he let it slide. Instead, he grabbed the remote and flipped through the channels. The cartoon they had been watching earlier no longer held his interest. He paused on a horror movie, a sinister score already building in the background.
"This looks better," he said, settling on the channel.
Anna glanced at the screen, her stomach twisting at the sight of a shadowy figure creeping across the frame. She wanted to protest but swallowed her words. "I don't mind," she lied.
