Anna woke up to the soft rays of sunlight streaming through her curtains, the faint chirping of birds outside her window. Stretching lazily, she turned to the other side of the bed, expecting to find Alexander. To her surprise, the space beside her was empty. Frowning, she sat up, her pink pajamas crumpled from sleep, and ran a hand through her messy hair.
Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she shuffled out of her room and headed down the hall. A maid was dusting the chandelier in the corridor, and Anna stopped to ask, "Have you seen Alexander?"
The maid paused her work and nodded. "He left very early this morning, Miss, and he seemed to be in quite a hurry."
Anna nodded, suppressing the pang of disappointment that welled up inside her. She had gotten used to Alexander's presence over the past few days, and his sudden absence felt strange. "Thank you," she said quietly, retreating back to her room.
