72. Hate

If not for the rising smoke, the stench of burnt flesh, and the pools of blood that littered the ground, it would have been not easy to believe anything had happened here. Not even the carcass of the horses had been left.

What in Heaven's gate was this?

Eiko and I locked gazes before agreeing inwardly to search the environment.

After a minute or so of looking, she finally found something and called my attention to it. It was a writing on the ground… except that its ink was blood.

Eiko read it before I arrived, and when I did, I understood why her countenance turned sour.

These words were written in blood: "If you wish to see him alive, approach the citadel before sunrise."

"The citadel?" I muttered, raising my head to look in the direction of the city. Even from our locations, the shattered citadel still had its peak slightly visible.

The issue was… that journey could take a day or two.
