Kent couldn't help but think Long Buyu's experience in the Mowling Secret Realm was truly unfortunate. However, his bravery was commendable, considering how risky the situation had been. Kent, when thinking about it from Long Buyu's perspective, might have made the same choice in his shoes.
"Alright, let's move on from this," Kent said, "Don't dwell on it too much. As I promised, don't worry, I won't forget you once there's a suitable monster contract. Come back to the city with me, and we'll gather three mercenaries. These three are my former subordinates, and it looks like they can be of use now."
As they approached the plains, Kent switched to his off-road motorcycle. Long Buyu, seeing this, also took out his own bike. Over the years, his profits from the Kylin had given him a considerable fortune.
The next afternoon, they returned to Earthstar City, weary from their travels. Kent remembered his last conversation with Zhao Mengxi and felt uneasy, fearing that he might lose her.
After some thought, he sent a message: "Mengxi, I'm back. I missed you so much it drives me crazy."
Half a minute later, his phone buzzed with a new message. Kent quickly opened it and sighed in relief.
"Kent, you jerk, I need to see you now."
The tone wasn't what Zhao Mengxi would usually use, but Kent understood well enough. He realized how much of a jerk he'd been, which had genuinely angered her.
...
Zhao Mengxi had been feeling miserable lately. The sudden revelation that her boyfriend, Kent, not only loved her but also another girl, felt like a thunderstrike. It left her feeling suffocated.
After a period of contemplation, she became calmer, but still couldn't make up her mind. She admitted that she did love Kent. Being with him had made her happy and secure.
But love was selfish, and her traditional upbringing, influenced by Earthstar's pre-cataclysm one-man-one-woman policy, made her see relationships as something between two people. The presence of another person would only ruin it.
About five days after Kent's departure, Fan Qingmei unexpectedly returned to the city and even visited the school.
When Zhao Mengxi heard the news, she decided to speak to Fan Qingmei in detail. She thought that if she could convince Fan Qingmei to let go, she might be able to salvage her relationship with Kent. However, whether she could remove the knot in her heart was another story.
During their conversation, Zhao Mengxi began to regret having this talk. She realized that Fan Qingmei was an extremely capable, beautiful, bold, and independent woman, and in comparison, Zhao Mengxi felt somewhat inferior.
From their talk, Zhao Mengxi learned that Fan Qingmei had already shared intimate moments with Kent and had sworn loyalty to him. She wasn't willing to let go of their relationship; it was her most beautiful memory and the dream of her future.
Fan Qingmei also said that if Zhao Mengxi insisted on asking her to leave Kent, she would comply. However, she preferred to try coexisting peacefully. If that wasn't possible, she would wish Zhao Mengxi and Kent happiness.
After hearing Fan Qingmei's thoughts, Zhao Mengxi reflected deeply. She realized that the issue wasn't her fault. In fact, she could only sigh that in matters of the heart, no one could truly control things. There was no clear right or wrong.
In relationships, there was always a need for compromise and adjustment, sometimes even settling for less.
After much thought, Zhao Mengxi came to a conclusion. She didn't want to let go of this love. In fact, sharing a man with a remarkable woman like Fan Qingmei wasn't so shameful. As long as she was happy, it didn't matter what others said.
Just then, in the middle of her lecture, Zhao Mengxi received another message from Kent.
"Yes, I love you."
Seeing those words made Zhao Mengxi smile involuntarily. It was the happiest moment she had had in a long time.
She clutched her phone tightly, stood up with a light heart, and walked out of the classroom, leaving her classmates and teacher in stunned silence.
...
After handling the emotional matters, Kent felt much lighter.
"Long Buyu, call these three people. Tell them I've summoned them back to the city for a task," Kent said as he handed Long Buyu a piece of paper with the contact information of A Long, Green Hair, and Old Mouse.
Kent then rode his motorcycle back to Changdao Hotel. His original plan had been to spend ten days in the Mowling Secret Realm, but due to some unexpected events, he had returned nearly half a month later.
Thankfully, the trip had been quite fruitful.
Now, Kent couldn't wait to see Zhao Mengxi. He decided to relax for a couple of days and think about what to do next.
When Kent returned to Room 520 at Changdao Hotel and opened the door, he was a bit disheveled. Seeing him like this, all the ceremonial formality melted away, and Zhao Mengxi burst into laughter.
"Mengxi, I'm back!" Kent exclaimed, too eager to even change his shoes, wanting to hold Zhao Mengxi and kiss her right away.
But under Zhao Mengxi's stern gaze and verbal warning, Kent had to suppress his impulsive thoughts. He changed his shoes and, upon her command, obediently went to take a shower.
After all the running around, he had accumulated grime and dirt from the trip, and after a thorough 10-minute scrubbing, he finally felt relaxed, eager to curl up on the couch with Zhao Mengxi.
"Mengxi."
Kent didn't bring up the matter with Fan Qingmei. Instead, he embraced Zhao Mengxi tightly, burying his nose in her soft hair, while his hands wandered restlessly, making Zhao Mengxi blush with desire.
Two days passed, and Kent spent them in Changdao Hotel, either accompanying Zhao Mengxi or working on his report about the Mowling Secret Realm.
Finally, after finishing his 50-page report, which included many pictures and materials, Kent's phone rang.
"Boss, it's A Long. Green Hair and Old Mouse are with me. We just arrived in the city and ran into Long Buyu. He said you summoned us."
