Anita was in the library with Claire and Max, working on what she pretended was just another group project. Jace leaned casually against a bookshelf nearby, his eyes scanning the room for any unusual activity.

The unease hit Anita first—a sharp, instinctual sense of wrongness. She glanced at Jace, who had already stiffened, his gaze narrowing toward the windows.

“They’re here,” he muttered, his voice low.

“Who’s here?” Max asked, alarmed.

Jace didn’t answer. He moved swiftly to the window and peered outside. The sky was unnaturally dark, shadows writhing like living things against the building.

Anita stood, her pulse quickening. “What do we do?”

Jace turned to her, his expression grim. “We fight.”
