Jace led the way, his expression tight and focused. Anita followed close behind, her grip on her staff firm. Kael trailed slightly, his sharp eyes scanning their surroundings for any signs of danger.

“What exactly is this place?” Kael asked, breaking the silence.

“The Obsidian Forest,” Jace said without turning around, “is a place of illusions. It twists reality, confuses the senses. Most people who wander in never make it out.”

Kael frowned. “And your mentor decided this was a good place to hang out?”

“He’s not most people,” Jace replied flatly. “He thrives in places like this.”

Anita glanced at Jace. “What kind of person is he?”
