Chapter 138: The Calm Before the Storm
The area around the forest temple was very silent, which made it seem as if all of reality had gone into a pause. Anita and Jace came out of the building into the evening, moving like two zombies. The trees around them no longer buzzed with life; the noise of insects, birds, and animals now scarcely audible as if they half expected the arrival of someone special.
Anita cracked her knuckles and was still surprised at the lingering heat of the Heart of the Forest. “I didn’t think it would… become part of me,” she confessed, looking at him.
“That does make sense,” he whispered back at Jace. “The forest is not some place you went to; the forest decided you were worthy to protect it.” The Heart was not just an instrument; it was something akin to the heart of the forest. Now, it’s part of you.”
Anita did not continue with walking, and instead she addressed him squarely. But what is the implication of this for us? For this journey?”
