Chapter 149

Chapter 149: Echoes of the Past

The journey away from the valley was unnervingly quiet. The oppressive darkness that had consumed the land was gone, but the air still carried a heavy weight, as if the echoes of the battle lingered.

Anita held the combined shards close to her chest. Their warmth was a constant reassurance, but it was tempered by the gnawing feeling that they were being watched.

“Do you feel that?” Lira asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She walked with one hand on the hilt of her dagger, her sharp eyes scanning the terrain.

Jace adjusted the strap of his sword across his back. “Yeah. It’s like… the shadows aren’t done with us.”

Anita glanced over her shoulder. The valley behind them was shrouded in a faint mist, and for a moment, she thought she saw shapes moving within it. But when she blinked, they were gone.

“We should keep moving,” she said, quickening her pace. “The faster we get out of here, the better.”
